New to the site, I have relatively good mechanical inclination. I have read a few threads that said the AutoZone 35$ FA5040 idler arm is compatible whith the 87 pickups, and the most durable for cost. I'm only running 30x9.5s with stock ride hight. I don't Baja through the woods, just moderate trail riding with a few mud holes lol. Just wondering about part compatibility and durability for my application.

Thank you for the link, looks like a very easy change. I read one post stating that the FA5040 wasn't the listed part # for an 87, it's listed for like 91-96 or something like that but is compatible with the 87. I guess now thats my only question, is it compatible with an 87?

Yeah, i put that part number on my 87. It worked. Looking up an idler arm by application will give you a different part number. Good luck, remember some good old penetrating oil if the idler arm on your 87 is still original. It will help the puller pop less. And be careful to keep your fingers out of the way. That guy popping off could probably break some bones

 

The pitman arm on the other hand can be alot more diffucult to remove.
