Sunflower Mine Trail, AZ

Fun trail, but much more difficult than I had expected. My stock Tacoma with open differentials made it, but not without some battle scars. Numerous portions of the trail were dry creek bed which required crawling over some large rocks; I bottomed out on my front skid plate and rear axle more times than I can count. I had read that this trail was a 13-mile loop but about 8 miles in the trail suddenly ended (looked like it had washed away quite some time ago) and we had to turn around and go back through the boulder fields a second time. It is quite possible that we just took a wrong turn; if anyone has done this trail recently I am curious to know. We did not see anyone else the whole 5+ hours we were out there. Even though neither of us suffered major damage, I would not recommend this trail to someone driving a stock truck; even my friend's TRD Tacoma with a few inches of lift bottomed out numerous times. Still had a great time and seeing the old mine was well worth the trip.

I did this trail last year. Was the spot that looked washed away in a creek bed? If so the trail continues on after that and it gets harder after that. Its a fun trail and would like to run it again sometime.

The trail looks a little tougher than when I ran it 5 or 6 years ago. Might have to get back up there and check it out again. It sure is a beautiful area and a great place to camp out.

The part that washed away was actual trail, above the level of the creek bed, I wish we had taken a picture of the spot. It was just past the remains of an old truck; as I recall it appeared to be a flat-bed cargo truck, definitely not a trail rig by any means.

Is this the truck? It used to keep going a ways past that and loop back around to where you started.

I'm pretty sure that's the truck; it was the only old truck I saw other than the one at the mine.
