October 14 2007 the Maze, Hurricane West Rim

Saturday, October 14, 2007 the Utah 4 Wheel Drive Association sponsered several trail runs within the West Rim Trail complex east of St. George, Utah. Some friends and I went. It was the inaugural run for my 84 regular cab, anfter a rebuild for a blown head gasket and a cracked head. We were familiar with the area, and thought that I would be ok. In the end, this side trail was more difficult than we knew. It is a solid 4+, with many rigs having a hard time with several obstacales, and some body damage and drivetrain breakage. 33's and 2 lockers or 35's and one locker are the minimum.

Great mix of rigs, both yotas and jeeps, even a slick airbagged nissan.

Lineup at the actual start of the trail. My rig is the blue pickup at the rear. I parked at this point and walked and rode along.

Overlook just past the first dropoff. The entire trail runs just off of the edge of the sandstone cliffs, but not right on the edge like the Moab Rim. St. George is in the background.

Drop-off at the first obstacle. My friends solid swapped 88 4runner.

Jeep Commando. He broke his front driveline trying to make this turn, lukkily he had spares.

Rough step. May guys had to be strapped up to get up this. However, none of the yotas needed any help.

Nissan climbing a 60 degree slope. Pretty slick rock

Final obstacle. Steep slick climb, followed by 2 tight turns, another climb, and then a boulder that high centers you.

TJ's suck

Sweet tubed pickup, owned, built, and run by a girl.

Scorpion found on the trail

Our security detail

Great trail, only about a mile and a half long, took us about 5 hours to get all 12 rigs through. Awesome weather. From the end of the trail, you can hook back onto the main trail (3+) than continues to the east, and meets the top of the Hurricane Dunes. You can follow the dunes down to Sand Hollow Reservoir.

Sweet pics, I was there on West Rim. That run was actually put on by Utah 4x4 Club and RedSands Offroad! Glad you had a good time. Do you live here?
