CB and antenna instally in my 05 Tacoma

Hey all. I don't post too much on yotatech but thought I'd share my CB install with everyone. I had seen this radio installed in the older tacomas and it was a nice fit so I figured I'd try it out on my rig. It took some 'slight' modification to my dash kit (ie: it was a major pain in the ass) but the final result turned out OK. Here's a few pics:

This one shows how I made the ground connection behind the tail light. I sanded the area under one of the fender bolts down to bare metal and attatched it to the base using 10 guage wire.

The coax is run along with some other wiring to the front of the bed and enters the cab through a grommet located behind the drivers side storage compartment. From there I ran it under the carpet and up through the center console. It was a tight fit and all 18 feet of the cable got used. Hooked everything up to the swr and after some fine tuning I'm getting 1.1 across the board, so all is well.

That antenna mount looks OEM. Good job. How is the reception with the current placement?

Sorry to dig this up again, but I was going to use the firestik sidemount that you used (looks GREAT, BTW), but was on the firestik website and they only recommended that mount for 2'-3' antennas...have you had any problems with yours? It appears to be a 4', no? Thanks for any advice. If anyone else has used this mount I'd love to hear from you..there is a 4Runner out there that gave me the idea but I can't seem to track his thread.

Well I know this is an old thread, but...your install looks real clean, but I would advise againt doing the ground the way you did. Ive never installed a CB before so I guess I dont really know if its possible to ground elsewhere, but it looks like you are asking for rust problems down the road . With having it sanded down to bare metal like that it wont take long, espacially back ther where moisture tends to build up.

You must sand to bare metal to make a good ground. Or get the same kit I did with the no ground option.

agreed if you want a good chassis ground with low resistance you need to sand to bare metal. If you're that worried about rust you can always paint over it after its bolted.

Indeed, mine is actually grounded to my tool box-either way is bare metal.

Yeah, I understand about the ground, but if you sand to bare metal like that it WILL rust. I definatley would have painted over it if I couldnt find a way to ground inside the cabin. Ir find a factory gounding point, such as alt/batt to frame.
If he leaves it like it is, he will be battling rust real soon.
