An American GPS in Paris
And other cities/countries around Europe...
A friend tells me that a typical GPS unit bought here in the States won't work over in Europe...that the device needs some special European software/hardware/maps...I don't know.
Anyone know anything about this?
Sounds like hogwash to me. I figure any GPS can work over there, it'll just need the proper maps loaded onto it.
I have a 3 1/2 week Europe trip planned, so I was thinking it'd be nice to have a handheld GPS while across the pond.

I have a Garmin Vista C, it came loaded with a base map that covers the world. Not much detail acorss the pond, but maps on CDs are out there that would supply the roads. At least with Garmin products.

Mine works in Afghanistan. GPS Global Positioning System
Depending on your model, if you have map software, you may be able to purchase more specific stuff for your destination but that doesnt effect operation..

That's like saying your watch won't work because you are in different time zone...
You will want to switch it from English units to metric units and load in the proper map if it's not there already, but it will work fine. Even without a map, it will track your position, allow you to set waypoints, etc.

Yeah, thanks guys, that's what I thought.
He heard this from a supposedly reputable source, ha!
I have an old-school Garmin Vista, so I get to use this trip as an excuse to pick up something new, yay.
