Kick panel or stock tweeter location for 99 4-runner?
Guys,
I just picked up a '99. What would you recommend as the best tweeter location for widest soundstage? In the factory tweeter location at the top of the a-pillar or by using a q-logic type kick panel?

Tweeters are best heard at earlevel, higher sounds don't go through anything unlike bass, that is why you hear bass before anything else, so put your tweets closest to earlevel as possible and point them towards you

The above statement is totally incorrect. (Sorry Memphis Yota)
While high frequency sounds dont pass through much by virtue of the small wavelength, this does not neccesitate their placement at eye level.
One of the most very basic concepts of IASCA sq is the soundstage, imaging, and depth. The sound stage is considered to be at eye level or slightly below and out beyond the firewall. The further away the better, and it is acceptable for it to be a little low. Imaging refers to how the sound system localizes an insturment or singer on the soundstage. Depth is just a term used to describe the distance to the sound stage.
ALL of the best systems that Ive ever heard with DEEP soundstages use kickpanels - and NOT those cheesy QLogic POS. (Make no mistake, the qlogic kick is a POS.)
My advice is to make your own kickpanels, the hardest part is the aiming of them for the best imaging and depth of soundstage. Once that's done, you just anchor them, then stretch your fleece/old t shirt over them and start glassin! Your finish is up to you.
Here are my kicks - they took a while to build and a LONG time to finish the way I wanted. (The finish is better than 99% of the vehicles on the market...lol) Notice the tweeter position. These kicks I didnt take any time to play with aiming and the swiveling tweeters saved me...
Right now the system will throw a soundstage about in the middle of the engine bay at just below intake plenum level. The center stage is VERY well defined too. I cant count the non-audiophiles whose jaws have dropped when I've had them give a listen. Kicks are definately the way to go, just not Qlogics.

the wire you see in pic above was the day of installation. It has long since been removed. lol

I can build you a set like mine for about 650+shipping with a basic choice of colors and they will image very well for you. If you'd prefer a carpeted look the price would be 300.
