Car Audio - the "In Depth" thread

Doing some searching in here found that unlike many other topics, car audio has all the good knowledge buried and scattered around and a lot of it is opinionated as opposed to facts. This thread is intended to clear that up.

First thing we should clear up is what comes factory:
(See measuring info in FAQ at bottom of post)
(If you PM me with info, I will edit this post so everything will remain at the beginning instead of having to weed through post after post)

1st Gen:
Front dash: 4"
upgrade package
5.5" in boxes hung from the roll bar with zip-ties

2nd Gen:
Front dash: 4"T
Rear side: 4"
upgrade package
Rear side: 5.25" (can anyone confirm this?)
Rear upper: 3"
Amp: 3 amps with crossover for the rear?

3rd Gen:
Front tweeter: 1"? (is this an upgrade or do all you have this?)
Front door: 6.75"
Rear door: 5.25" (4" relative cone size, but replaces with 5.25")
upgrade package
Locations and sizes?

4th Gen:
Front door: 7" or 6x9"?
Rear door: 4" or 6.5"?
upgrade package
Locations and sizes?

------------------------------------

The following space will be used for FA(In Depth)Q's. If you have a question PM me and I will add them and/or answer them.

What is the difference between coax and component speakers?
Could someone give us a little better info on this and give us some reason why one is used over the other?

How to measure physical speaker size?

3 1/2" Speaker
4" Speaker
4 X 10" Speaker
4 x 6" Speaker
5 1/4" Speaker with Tabs
5" Speaker
5 X 7" Speaker
5 1/4"
6 1/2" 3-Hole Speaker
6 X 8" Speaker
6 X 9" Speaker
8" Speaker
What does "bridgeable" or "bridged" mean and why is it good/bad?
anybody want to PM me the answer to this with some good links?

What are Ohms and why are they important? What is the best for my car?
anybody want to PM me the answer to this with some good links?

From what I understand, stock is 7", but replacements are typically 6.5-6.75".

Factory stock is what we are listing here. Can we get confirmation on all of this?

I'll delete all my post chatter that says 7" for the fronts when we clarify this as to not clutter with incorrect sizes.

I know a two companies make 7" speakers though.

What about mounting depths too?

98 Limited Runner, fronts were 6.5's and the rears were definately 4 inchers. We made a custom adapter to get some 6.5's into the the rear doors.

I took a pic of the stock front speaker. The total is 7 inches from the farthest monting points. The cone is 6 inches.

Mine are the same from what I can read... Did you measure the points?

I know someone else said they were 7 inches too I just can't find the thread. https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f96/speaker-sizes-59768/ Post 20

EDIT: Can it be that the LTD has a different speaker?
My 6½'s just catch the basket with the screws if I don't use a plate behind it.

EDIT 2: If I get some time tomorrow, I will measure the mounting depth at the shortest point with the window down, and the openings on my 4R, front and rear.

When you measure a speaker, the cone is what dictates the size, not the mounting points.

4th gen's have component 6x9's in the front door and 6.5 in the back door. Most people who upgrade go to a 6.5 component in the front door with use of a bracket.

The upgraded JBL system has a 10 speaker system. I know it has an additional 2 tweeters in the rear pillar where there are backup mirrors for the base system. And I think it also has speakers mounted in the center of the dash. JBL has separate amps from the head unit and a sub in the right rear panel in the cargo area.

If planning to upgrade a full system, it is recommended to stay away from the JBL initially since it is harder to work with due to the fact that it is a proprietary system. Hope this helps.

Sorry to disrespect your authoriti... but you are wrong, sir!

BTW - I wanted to keep this thread neat and clean without all the debates to follow, so would you be able to remove some of the replies? I will let you know which ones and when, if you can. Leave them all for now until we get a bit more sorted out. What I am learning out of all of this, is nobody in here has a freaking clue when it comes to this topic. Even those that thought they did are proving wrong in and it appears this topic is one big guessing game. Hopefully this thread will get to the bottom of that!
