ovrrdrive - mounting an amp like that is perfectly acceptable in every sense of the manner. Heat rises and it wont get trapped there, instead the aluminum heat sink absorbes the heat and disspates it directly. This is why the mosfets are directly anchored to the heat sink with heat sink compound. Mounting vertically wont make any difference - actually it may make the situation ever so slightly worse... Take a look at specific heats of aluminum vs air.

Al = 900 Joules/(kg*K)
Air = 1003 Joules/(kg*K)

Aluminum is a better at rapidly absorbing heat and consequently at dissipating it... How he has the amp now is using all of its surface area quite well. But the difference should be negligable if the amp is designed with enough mass in the heat sink to dissipate all the heat that is generated....

881stgen - measure your voltage at the battery for me with that DMM (engine running) and then again back at the amp (engine still running). If the amp is starved for voltage from a weak connection on the power wire it will tend to overheat. I also agree with ovrrdrive on the ground issue - try to find a beefier section of metal to anchor to.

Incidentally a capacitor will not help anything in this situation...

You may also just have a faulty amp...sony does not make very desireable equipment imo.

id try to get the terminal ring under the mount if you can...one trick I also do is to sand (wire wheel on my dewalt 18v drill) the threads and washers of that bolt. You can't have too much contact area on the ground...

Well I relocated hte ground yesterday and have pictures of wut I did. I didnt expect to have to take off both seats. Anyways it wasnt too hard. I'll post the pics when i get home from work today (around 5:30). I was able to shorten the length of the ground wire by about 8 inches. So i guess it was worth it.

Well i got the ground hooked up under the seat bracket. Here are some pics of it so you can tell if it is okay or not.
- A picture of the sanded away surface.
- Just showing everything all torn apart.
- Here is the actual ground wire connected and ready to go.
- Final product after i got everything back together.
- Shows how big the piece that i took out was (im sure a lot of yall have Hanes manuals around for good comparison!)
- Relocated all the wires to come out behind the carpet and im holding the ground wire.
- Everything back there ready for the subs to come back in!

It worked fine today no problems so the ground is okay, i forgot to check the amp and see if it is a little bit cooler. Ill check it whenever i do go out again.
