98 SR5 Stereo Harness

Just opened up my dashboard and tried to install an aftermarket stereo in my new 4Runner. Had the wiring harness I purchased at NAPA hooked up to my stereo but when I went to hook it up to the stock harness, it didn't fit. In fact the pins dont even look like they are the right size (too big). I bought a Universal harness for 1987 and up toyotas? Not sure exactly what to do here...Where would my best bet be to get the right harness? Has anyone else had this problem?

I dont think they are universal. You can go to a stereo shop to find a harness...or you can splice wires.

stereo shop would be good, or even best buy?

where are you located? Best Buy has them, Circuit City has them, so does PepBoys and many other Auto Chains, along with Wal-Mart, the reason i asked location is that Meijers has always had what i needed too (MI shopping chain, kinda like wal-mart, but cool)

joe,

welcome to YT

first, please post these kinds of questions in our stereo forum. second, check the tech section. there are two writeups that address your question re harnesses and they have part #s and install instructions

look at the harness again and trace it back, there might be a second set of harnesses.

Search. You need to unhook/remove the amp. The wires are hooked to that. Most of Toyota stereos use the same harness, including the 4Runners from 87-02.

hehehe no worries! In most post '94 4runners, toyota put OEM amps in to boost power to the speakers. You can either try to incorporate this amp using and amplifier integration harness which will plug into that pigtail you found (Met 70-8112 is the part number) Or you can just bypass the OEM amp. Lucky for you the OEM amp should be right behind and slightly below the main radio on its own bolted in brackets. Youll notice there are two sets of pig tails going into that amp, and one coming out to the back of your origional radio. Unplug those 2 pig tails then plug em into the harness you bought. When done you just bypassed the OEM amp and are done!
