I wanted to start out by saying your Runner is damn clean compared to mine. Looks nice.

IF I were you, and I'm not..so this is just my opinion... and you know how those are..

If you wanted a good sound head unit that DOESN'T look flashy.. and will match /look somewhat OEM check out a Nakamichi head unit. They're black, look like OEM, and some models let you change between green (like on my 2000) and amber like on the later model 3rd gens.

My HU has a color scheme option where you can make it just about any color you want. I got mine to match the stock interior lights perfectly, making it blend in. That is the main reason I went with it. Oh, it's a JVC.

yea. theres all sorts of diff hu's out there that will allow u to set them to the look u want. i do agree sometimes i wish my unit would sit in tight like the stockers, but at other times, i dont mind at all, cause it gives ya easier access and such.

I'll give those HUs a look too...not a bad idea.

As far as amping the speakers goes, read my thread on that very subject (unless you have not done so already.) Long story short is - I tried it, it worked "okay", but I still got noise, so I took it out. Thanks to the many suggestions from members in that thread, I'll be giving this another try soon.

really nice of you to accompany the text with the photos. I am glad I did not even attempt this myself, I break things when I attempt car stereo installs.

Also wanted to mention the Sony CDX GT-400 I believe is the model number and they give like 7 color options for the backlighting. I think there are decks out there with like 256 color options but the factory look of the stock Head unit is hard to beat for stealth.

I tried to salvage my old speaker mount, but my screw points were farther in than the surround, so it didn't work. This is what I did.

1) Bought Scosche SAU56 Universal 7" Speaker Adapter Plate ($18 shipped)
2) Countersunk the backside with a exacto knife (the plastic is real soft so a tip of a drill would not work).
3) Taped up the back-side of the speaker with masking tape so my next operation would not get tons of metal shavings sticking to the speaker magnet.
4) Grinded the speaker frame to provide clearance for the factory speaker mount points.
5) Installed flush head fasteners with plenty of seal to join the speaker to the adapter plate.
6) Fastened the speaker/adapter plate to the door mount points, again with plenty of seal.

I followed everything I saw here. Great tips! But one thing. The wire coming from the door that is connected to the crossover... they are pink & purple. Which one is Pos? I have to clip the wires to connect to the crossover.

Wish I could help, but I ran all new wiring.

I know I've seen toyota wiring diagrams on the internet that tell you which color does what, but for the life of me, I can't remember where I've seen it.

You may want to post a new thread and see if someone knows where to find those color codes.


EDIT: Although, looking back of one of my first photos, I see the 2 wires you're talking about. Can you not just trace them thru the white connector, to the stock speaker itself and see where they attach? It should be easy to tell which wire is pos and which wire is neg as to how they physically attach to the speaker itself.
