judging from your pictures you have the same motor, welder, and beer choices as a i do.

it looks 1000X better once its cleaned up. Bottom end is coming apart today so hopefully it will be at the machine shop this week.

thats a very nice mk3, post up some exterior shots

im almost 100% sure my valve seals are leaky, the valves which have a wet gooey black surface coorespond to the pistons which have gooey black tops instead of dry black tops

1,2,5,6 are the worst, 3 is moderate, and 4 is ok

bottom end is now completely torn down, all the pistons, rods, caps, and bearings are sorted in ziplock bags, and the crankshaft safely stored in a box. Block goes off to the machine shop first part of next week. I'd take pictures but my camera is completely dead now.

i just checked the tubes and theres no sign of any of the rings you see in that picture, its probably just some goop on the walls from pushing the piston up part way then bringing it back down. . . . i dont know really. but its not rust on the walls for sure

That's what I thought, just making sure! Any HP estimates for when you get it back together? Did I mention how addicted I am to the sound of a boosted straight six?

If only I didn't live in California... I wish they'd let me put in a Supra motor... but no... "It has to be a motor that was offered in the exact same model of the same year or newer..." I want a 7mgte!

i'm shooting for 300 RWHP on the stock turbo and ~375 RWHP someday on an upgraded turbo. on an upgraded turbo 375 is barely flexing its muscles but will be more than enough to really freak people out And also those are wheel HP numbers, thats in the 340 and 420 range respectively at the crank

my MAP ECU will arrive this coming week, it was on a holiday sale so i went ahead and bought it.

From the powerhouse racing website:

PHR MAP-ECU

The MAP ECU allows you to completely remove the restrictive MAF meter and convert to a more forced induction friendly speed-density system. By doing so, you can improve throttle response, spool-up, and pick up horsepower by tuning the Air/Fuel ratio for optimum performance. The MAP ECU also controls Nitrous systems via a built-in RPM window switch, and can be password protected to prevent tampering. The MAP CAL software allows full control of the engine fuel mapping from 0-8000 RPM and 0-30 psi of boost. The datalogging features are a must-have for any tuner, and the MAP ECU can be connected to the most popular Innovate LM-1, AEM, FJO, and PLX wideband kits. On the Supra TT, we've made over 960 RWHP using 1000cc injectors controlled by the MAP ECU. The PHR MAP-ECU currently powers the AAP/PHR Street Supra in the NHRA Street Tire class to multiple 9-second passes. This is one powerful piggyback EMS, not just your average electronic component! On our dyno using a mildly modified Supra TT as a test sample, we've seen increases of 22 wheel HP by simply removing the stock AFM and converting to speed-density. Get yours today while the "Summer Special" lasts!
Price: $650

I paid $469

Here's a video I made of my Supra build-up...it has some still shots as well as some footage at the track: http://home.off-road.com/~kemanuel/S...addlenbike.wmv

Enjoy that engine rebuild! PM me if you have any questions...and good luck with those PITA oil pump driveshaft bearings!

good to see a vehicle that may have ended up in the junk yard brought back to life. i hate the images mk3s get as being old pieces of junk just because MOST people dont take care of them since you can get them cheap

Thanks, it has been a lot of work but very rewarding at the same time. All of my automotive knowledge has come from working on this car. I really like the fact that it is such a sleeper too, it routinely beats new Corvettes at the track--I love seeing the look on people's faces when a 17-year old car quietly passes them by!

Sshhh! Don't let my wife know, b/c she knows that I've always wanted one of the newer Supra's with the 2jz. I do have a 2jz in her Lexus though it's not the almighty "t" version.

A turbo Supra powered SAS 4Runner, hummm? Damn that has a nice ring to it!

IS300-yeah it is very tempting. I would have to do a 6spd swap on it though, an automatic in a sports car would just be wrong and not as much fun.

went to the machine shop durring my lunch break, total out the door ~$2600

Labor: ~$800
inspected/cleaned/bored/decked block
cleaned/rebuilt head (pressure checked, replace valve seals, bushings etc)
balanced/cleaned crank and rods
complete bottom end assembly including EVERY SINGLE bearing/seal

Parts: ~$1800
Forged pistons
complete rebuild kit (every part/bearing/gasket there is)
MHG
ARP hardware for ALL fastners

I'm probably forgettting some things but ill check out the invoice when they write it up. So basically they give me back a fully assembled bottom end w/ warranty on the install, a complete rebuilt head, and i just have to bolt the two together when i get them back. I'm leaving work early today to drop it off

Sounds like a good price. I assembled the bottom end myself but gladly would have paid the difference to have a reputable shop do it. I did pay an extra $200 to have the rotating assembly balanced, which is included in the $528 bill from the shop. Here are my actual expenses...thought it might help in case you forgot about a thing or two:

$528 - Engine machine work (block)
185 - Engine machine work (cyl head)
625.92 - Ross forged pistons & rings
345.79 - Toyota Engine gasket kit
266.26 - Toyota Engine bearings
165 - Cometic Metal Headgasket
174.97 - Toyota Oil pump
40.29 - Toyota Freeze plugs
69.44 - Toyota Crankshaft bolts

32.52 - Toyota Timing belt
45.18 - Turbo MLS gasket
25.30 - Oil pump driveshaft bearing set
16.43 - Misc hoses
42.82 - Misc gaskets
46.84 - Engine drivebelts
36.57 - Fluids (incl. Synth trans fluid)
25.11 - Engine fasteners

$2670

yea those were just ballpark numbers i had off the top of my head from talking to the guys, they are gonna keep track of the line-item cost and let me know after they get started exactly what everything is gonna be. I'm also getting the complete rotating assembly balanced as well. The guys at the shop were incredibly nice and really knew their stuff. Its good for peace of mind to know its in good hands. They specialize in foreign motors too so its not some big-block only shop that isnt familiar with toyota engines.

MAP ECU arrived, what a nice piece. Its a perfect fit for a control freak such as myself. You control literally every function related to fuel input and have the ability to monitor and change them in real time. So sweet. . . I can't wait to get to play with it.
