I've been looking around at various lockers and it seems like this locker is said to be one the best autolockers. Detriots may be a little stronger but the aussies are alot cheaper. Anyone running this on yotatech? Also how are auto lockers with a manual transmission? Just thought I'd ask, pirate gave the aussie a good review.

full carrier detroit pros:
-long lasting
-stronger than stock carrier

cons:
-will grenade if you break an axle shaft
-more expensive than a lunchbox locker
-requires gears to be set up

aussie pros:
-cheap
-doesn't require gear setup

cons:
-probably won't last as long as a full carrier locker
-leaves you with the stock carrier and thin mounting flange

all things aside, i'll probably go with an aussie.

so is anyone here running a aussie? I was wondering about the noise. I heard some lock rights start getting louder as they get older.

I've ridden in his truck and it was hardly noticable. I doubt you'll be able to find much advice on older aussie's since they are relitively new.

I've had mine for about a month now. It is awesome traction wise. I do things in 2WD that I used to get hung up on (In 2WD). And I get through things in 4WD that I couldn't in 4WD before.

As far as noise, there is a little. I would set you up for dissapointment if I told you there was none. BUT, if you expect something you will be surprised by how very little there is. Without the stereo on I can hear it ratchet around corners when the clutch is in(if I listen closely). I think I've heard those loud metal clunks maybe a total of 3 times, it would be scary if everyone hadn't told me that it is a normal part of a locker's operation.

If I try to take a real sharp turn (Such as in a parking lot), and I don't dump the clutch or give it gas.....it will jerk and buck. And if I gas it around a corner at a stop light it will squeal the outside tire.

That being said I thing any of the lockers will make these noises. It's just what a locker does.

Your driving will change a little, but in my opinion it has made me safer and more cautious...what's wrong with that?

This is my first locker, so I've been super critical with the locker and it isn't completely un-noticable, but it is completely tolerable. I have no reservations about driving it on the street and I wouldn't change a thing.

It's all about the install.

I was one of the first to run one in a Toy. It's been near 3 years I'm guessing now. It's just as great today as it was when I intalled it. I have mine up front and I have a full Detroit in the rear. Steering is just about as easy with the locker as it was without. I don't get any ratcheting in the front and I "may" hear the locker once or twice a trip which is far superior to other lockers. In my opinion, if you are not going to run a selectable locker, then you should run the Aussie. This obviously is my opinion.

I have a aussie in the front too.
I have yet to run my truck on the trails since I just barely got it running and I am working out some engine oil leaks on it.

I would get both front and rear aussie lockers now that I look back on it.
I have a lockright in the rear of my truck and I am sure it's alot more noisy than the aussie is in the front.

Is this correct? Is the (open) rear differential the same in 95-04 tacoma as in a 95 and earlier pickup? I ask because aussie does not list a rear locker for the tacoma, but I wonder if the one they list for earlier trucks would work (in the tacoma).

8" diffs in all of the following and will be interchangable:

89-04 Runners rear
91-97 Cruisers front

Also 8" are e-locked Tacos and Runners from 96-2004.

79-85 fronts are 8" but 4 cylinder. You can exchange thirds, but the gears take some bastardization.

Open diffed Tacos, Tundras and T-100's are 8.4". That is still an 8" ring gear, but it has bigger bearings, seals, and carrier bearing caps.

For those with an interest in such things, Bill of aussie locker emailed me and said that they are planning/working on an locker for 8.4" and that it should be out sometime this year (wouldn't say when exactly).

So does this mean I could run the Aussie designed, for the 90-95 Runners in my 96? Or do you mean the 3rd's are interchangeable?

The one designed for a 90-95 V-6 would be the same as yours.

AFAIK, there is no such thing now, only for the 4 cyl diffs.

Actually I think you're right about it only being available for the 4cyl, I haven't checked in a while though.

I tried to order one last week for my 1990 V-6 4runner -
the Aussie is not yet available for the V-6. I guess that I might go with an EZ locker. Found them listed for $195.00 here http://www.swissmountain4x4.com/

I will be geting one within the next few weeks.
I will be puting it into my daily driver,but ill be sure to post my review of how well it handles on the highway.
Hopefully it wont be a big mistake,but for only 240$ bucks I just cant resist.

Which Detroit rear locker would be equivalent to the Aussie front locker on a 2nd gen Runner? I plan on doing 50% off road and 50% pavement. I need a locker thats can handle light rock crawling, snow, mud, steep hills, etc...
