Hi all,

What do you guys take with you for safety for 1 to 2 day off roading trips. For example, what kind of tools, parts etc...?

First Aid kit. Blankets and Towels more then you think you'll need. A couple hookless tow straps. Food and water (power bars and gatorade or soemthing). Assorted tools, wrenches screw drivers even a hammer, jumper cables. Make sure your spare tire is up to par. Multiple tow points on your truck. Maybe a couple fluids, antifreeze water, oil, atf etc etc. A small firearm shooting a rabid animal is better then getting bit by one miles away from help. Stuff to start a fire with. A hilift jack would be nice to have with all its accesories. Flare gun if your gonna be way out there. Cell Phone with extra battery. A GPS device would be very good to have. A few cases of beer for when your not driving of course.

Although you could go out without any of that stuff and be fine 95% of the time. That 5% that you'll need all or some of that stuff is definately not worth risking.

Oh and never, ever go alone. Preferrably have 2 vehicles at least another person in your vehicle.

Ditto. Out here in the AZ desert, water is one of the most important things you can have. Solo 'wheeling is very dangerous if you aren't prepared for the possibility of the unknown. Plan ahead and survive.

CynicX, where would you install multiple tow hook? Are you referring to the sides of the truck or just the front and back? I like the idea of a GPS. Never know when you'll run out of beer and you'll want the GPS to get you to source as fast as possible.

In addition to the things mentioned I would like to add a shovel. Just this past weekend I got high-centered (stuck) and had to dig myself out. We were in the middle of the woods, about 5 miles from anyone.

Kwik-dry JB Weld is another good thing to have with you.

Start here (from TLCA’s minimum required equipment):

Roll bar or Cage for all vehicles with removed tops (Landcruisers and 4runners). Roll bar or Cage recommended for trucks with permanent hard tops.
Seat belts for all persons (must be used). Child Safety Seats must be used as required by law.
First Aid kit.
Fire extinguisher.
Shovel.
Tow rope, cable (when used with a winch) or strap.
C.B. radio (antenna cannot be longer than 48"). Whip antennas must be secured.
Jack compatible with vehicle, lug wrench, and spare tire (usable, within one inch of vehicle tire height).
Flashlight (working).
One extraction point at both the front & rear of the vehicle.
Tire gauge
Serviced braking system with lights
Parking brake (may substitute a line lock or other similar device)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then, for a typical weekend run:

Hi-Lift jack (red)
CV if you are ADD (w/o manual hubs)
factory bottle jack
Shovel
Axe
spare starter
3 qt water
tow strap
tree strap
misc. rope
shackles x 3
snatch block
50' of 5/16" winch extension rope.
socket set (metric and reg)
misc. hand tools (screw drivers, long nose, vise grips, channel locks, etc).
multi meter
Haynes Manual
road flares x 8
small blue tarp
mag light (plus a streamlight in the cab)
spare batteries
duct tape
electrical tape
misc. wire connectors
10' 12ga wire
tire repair kit
air (foam) in a can 2 cans
1 lb bottle of propane
propane torch
leather gloves
Toilet paper
Mechanics wire and zip ties
a few hand tools
Power Tank (10 lb)
two air pressure gauges (one is digital)
tow strap
extraction strap
flashlights
extra coats, gloves, boots, etc.
dual-band amateur radio (50-watt)
police scanner
FRS/GMRS radios
CB
"jump start" battery
duct tape
wire
shovel
hatchet
knives
flashlights (inc. a Surefire G2 Nitrolon w/120-lumen bulb)
batteries
2.25-million candlepower spotlight w/rechargeable battery
water
rope

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you’re going on an extended hardcore trip (Rubicon, Moab, Mexico, etc):

· Another spare tire

· ball joints

· 1 set (F&R) drive shaft joints

· 1 spare Toyota driveshaft w/ CV (to make a new one if needed)

· 1 CV

· 1 IFS box w/ pitman arm

· 1 set of Toyota belts

· 1 set of Toyota hoses

· 1 set of ignition coils/ wires

· Assorted sizes of every hose out there: fuel line, power steering hose, vacuum lines, etc..

· Assorted box of every bolt from 6mm to 3/4", in almost every length.

· Spare hub, spare spindle

· spare brake lines

· misc. metal tabs, angle iron, gussets, u-bolts, spring fix it kit, shackles, chain, car tie down strap

· 2 cans of carburetor cleaner

· brake cleaner

· wd-40

· radiator patch

· gasket sealer

· JB weld

· 6 qts. oil

· 1gal. gear oil

· 1 gal radiator coolant

· 1 gal water

· 3 qts. ATF/ PS fluid

· 1 qt brake fluid

· 2 rolls towels

· a ton of zip ties

· bailing wire

· duct tape

· tools

· portable welder

· a jack stand (no more death hi-lift stunts)
extra blinkers

· full wiring kit

· fuses

· EFI fuse

· diagnostic crap

· toy manual

· spare headlight bulbs

· blinker bulbs

Stuff I’ve seen break:
axles, u joints, ifs box, pitman arms, knuckles, ifs box ripping off the frame (or cracking the mounts), broken spring hangers, broken springs, blown power steering systems, lost bolts everywhere, blown trannies, bent everything, busted driveshafts, ring and pinions, etc...

The hose collection and bolt collection get hit the hardest overall.

If you have to be towed out of a difficult trail your rig gets beat hard that way--try full speed yanking someone over 3' boulders on a tight corner and not let them hit the tree... the people towing you also tend to blow their rigs up as well, so be prepared to help those who are trying to help you.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Another list:

60" Hi-lift
5 gal. gas minimum (10 optimal)
(2) 5 gal water cans (you can treat one water can w/ iodine tablets, grapefruit seed extract or chlorine and let it sit while drinking off the other)
Shovel
6 foot digging bar( makes a great lever)
Big crowbar( ditto)
Octane boost
On-board air
Propane for seating a tire bead
tire plug kit (hole repair & sidewall repair)
extra deep cycle battery (charged) & jumper cables
Air filter, fuel filter,
full socket wrench set and other assorted tools (any tool required to change any parts you bring)
Extra socks(or suitable item to filter locally purchased fuel)
Anti freeze and water for the truck (in addition to drinking water)
extra oil
misc. nuts, bolts screws and washers
bailing wire
duct tape
epoxy glue
JB weld (on board welder is better)
extra fuses
OBD II code reader (in case the CE light comes on, you will know if it is serious or minor)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TRDParts4u Trail Damage Parts Kit (for Tacoma, but adaptable to 4Runners):

1 u-joint
1 power steering return line
1 upper ball joint
1 lower ball joint
1 power steering belt
1 alternator belt
1 upper radiator hose
1 lower radiator hose
1 front brake hose
1 rear brake hose
1 set of ignition wires
2 front wheel studs
2 rear wheel studs
4 lug nuts

I hope these ideas help…

Start here (from TLCA’s minimum required equipment):
In addition to that list you may want to add:
Food
Cookware
Tent
Sleeping bag
Folding chair
Toilet paper
Camp stove
Lantern
Cooler
etc........(That should cover anything I missed. Feel free to add your own personal requirements)

And for those that just need to see it on the list:
Liquid refreshment(beer after you are done wheeling for the day and back to camp)

And yes, this list could be modified to build a truck too!!!

One thing to think about is securing all this stuff down. Nothing worse than getting hit in the back of your head with a Hi Lift ect. If your in a wreck on or off road. Just my .02 Bryan
