What to do with your Auto hubs after manual swap
I am getting ready to swap the auto hubs on my 89 4Runner and I was wondering what everyone does with the auto hubs when complete a manual swap.
I am having a lot of trouble getting the allen screws out of the hub covers and I was considering cutthing them off. I assume there can/will be additional damage to the auto hubs but I'm not sure I should care.
Any input you have would be appreciated!

Ah, I see. I almost put something similar on when I rebuilt mine...
...but in the end I went back to the regular hex head bolt style because I was afraid the allen head pockets would get packed with mud etc.
Are they just not breaking loose and you're at risk of stripping out the socket/pocket? If so, maybe WD or PB Blaster and tincture of time.

When I saw the title of the thread I was going to find a pic of a trash can and post that, but then Crolison suggested the trail spare thing and I thought "OK". In reality though, I think you're more likely to break a cv before a hub. I'd say grind away. If you want to try drilling them, I have some ez outs you could borrow. (not that they are very "ez") Might be able to save the covers that way. LMK.

I kinda figured most people trash them since I never see any threads like "FS: Used Auto Hubs"
EZ out is a great idea - I have something like an ez out that I'm gonna go try right now.
I'm actually doing this because I tore the inner CV boot and the tripod gear is a little jacked up. AND, since my friend Mike hooked me up with 2 spare CV's I am going to replace the questionable one and swap the hubs while I'm at it.
Hopefully I can find time to get all this done by the weekend so I do some wheelin - wanna come with us? We'll probably go to Saguaro, but this time we are talking about going to the 3rd or 4th cove. Probably going to go on Sunday but we're open to whatever works for everyone.

I took the grinder to it - probably not the most practical way, but it was fun! and only took about 20 minutes.
Once I get them swapped I'll post up some pics - along with the other 20 mods I've done over the past few months.
Thanks for all your input - I appreciate it!

I'm not done yet, but the biggest issue I've run into is getting those allen head looking screws out - I used the grinder to cut the heads off. And I'm having trouble finding a 54mm socket.
I'll let you know if I run into any other issues along the way.

If I remember right all harbor freight torque wrenches have lifetime warranties...
Good call changing them out before they broke on you. After about a year of wheeling both of my auto hubs have failed on me. I just ordered my manual hubs last night.
