Tire hop

It drives me nuts going over soft terrain (sand for example) in 2wd spinning the back tires and they start hopping. I know I can throw her into 4wd but thats not the point. Do you guys know how to fix that or maybe some causes. I dont wanna put up with it no longer, if thats the first mod I gotta do than I will do it

I noticed this recently too after I got my 5.29's in.
Started hopping when going through snow (and spinning tires a bit).
I think it may have something to do with axle wrap.
Not sure though.
Any help is appreciated!

Yep, check those rear suspension link bushings for wear. For a leaf spring suspension the solutions are to get stiffer springs or add a traction bar.

Installing lower gears will exacerbate the symptoms with the added torque.

Are you guys trying to rip out your spider gears??????????
Do you have any idea on how bad it is to spin a trucks rear end (especially if it hops)
Things that WILL break......
1 -- Spider Gears
2 -- Ring & Pinion
3 -- Drive Shaft
4 -- Axle shafts
5 -- Universal Joint
6 -- Drive shaft Yoke
7 -- Tranny
8 -- Transfer Case
I broke a yoke in my YJ along time ago, it destroyed my new
Flowmaster. We broke a frame on an FJ spinning it in a hole which caused the drive shaft to cut all tail light wires and brake lines. You know that is why there is a 4wd option. If you want to spin tires then get some bald tires from a tire store and have at it
Moral of the story is Spinning Tires = Broke ˟˟˟˟

Surfaces like sand often REQUIRE spinning the tires up to get up an incline...

In the Toy rear axle usually the first thing to go is the ring and pinion, but they are very strong.

all i have to say to you is YJ yokes are nothing but POS's (trail rated my a$$)

with his config, there really isnt any concievable way he can break any of the **** you listed (unless they are in bad condition) on sand.

1) R&P will go first

2) not with his setup and not in sand

3)only if he puts a big dent in it and not likely on sand

4) look @ #2

5&6) not unless his axle wrap is so bad that it binds the joint, toys do not have u-joint and yoke probs, also look @ #2

7)look @ #2, especially if he has an R150

8)look @ #2 especially if he has a 4cyl, there are few people who have broken t-cases with torque related stress. i know of two on PBB right off hand(convertiyota-broke AP output shaft [4.3 buggy on 44's] and scott@rockstomper - busted a 4.7 gearset and took a chunk out of the housing[44's as well]) both guys broke the REAR case (in duals) because of their giant tires and the gear reduction

Have you heard of Tread Lightly?
Go install a locker. The whole idea is not to spin tires let alone prevent it from hopping.
When you spin tires and hopping is when you can break stuff...like the previous post.

Find a club and hopefully they will teach you how to wheel your truck the RIGHT way.

Sorry if I sound harsh but its things like this that gets trails closed.

Yes. Have you ever wheeled on sand dunes? There is no such thing as crawling when trying to climb the face of a dune. Hell, it can also be a problem in snow when you're the one breaking trail through 2-3' of fresh.

Ok first of all, I m not one to rip up trail either. I hate to hear about trails getting closed down cause they get mest up. My problem is when I'm in sand and it happend on snow too. To keep going the tire is spinning. I know how horrible tire hop or axle wrap is thats why i wanna fix it. It just happend to me twice and thats it must be gone. Thanks for the advice. Just bought the truck so ill just add that to the repair list.

For me, first time it happened, I let off the gas IMMEDIATLY!
Had to do it once more to get through a nice deep plow pile of snow, but hated every second of it.
I always try to prevent my tires from spinning, especially since they're new, but when there's snow on the ground, it's kinda hard to do.
Time to add one more thing to the list of upgrades.
Thanks for the help,
Todd

Nice, Hyperlite. I'm glad we have a fellow wakeboarder in the house. Wakeboarding's the shiz. I went to Orlando 2 years ago and met every one of the pro's. I rode and partied with them all. Parks, Shane, Murray, Ruck, Nunn, and Shapiro to name a few. They are really cool. I sucked compared to them on the pro level but they invited me to a party and I eventually rode the cable with them. Those guys are consistantly good. It was awesome. They were all there and lived the lifestyle that you and I thought that they would. It was really, really cool.. Anyway, we need to get in touch. The next time my friends and I come to Tellico, we should get together. lcopeland22@netzero.com
