best backspacing for minimal lift

I will be buying a set of black rockcrawler wheels 15x8 within the next month or so and am just curious as to what is the best backspacing to go with when using a 33x12.50 tire with minimal lift. I was thinking that 3.75" would be good but I just want to check. Thanks.

As close to stock is the best. 3.75" is about 1" less than stock (pushes wheel 1" farther fron the truck) and with an 8" rim, that is 1" wider than stock, so you'll be 2" wider than stock. Wider increases the chances of rubbing which may mean more lift or trimming. I have a link to a writeup on a truck w/ 4.5-4.75" backspaced rims on my web page:

Of course, if running ball joint spacers, you need to be no more that 4.5" backspacing to avoid wheel/tire contact with the suspension.

First of all thanks, you always give me such great information. I know Im a newb, but I have to learn somehow right? Ok about the backspacing and balljoint spacers you say no more than 4.5" backspace, I am not to educated on backspacing but just to ask a stupid question to double check and not get myself into trouble....you are saying 1"-4.5" of backspacing will work great with ball joint spacers? Thanks

With the ball joint spacers, you need a backspacing "no greater" than 4.5" in order that the wheel clears the upper steering arm. So yes, 4.5" would work, 4" would work, 3.75" would work, etc. However, the wider you push the wheels/tires out (less backspacing = wider stance) the wider the arc swung by the front tires when you crank the steering wheel over. If the arc of the tire meets the fixed arch of the wheel well, you get rubbing. A wider arc = greater chance of rubbing. Case in point, had one buddy w/ 33x10.50 tires on stock 15x7 wheels (4.75" backspacing). He did a 2" body lift and had zero rubbing, did no trimming, nothing. Had a second buddy with 15x8/3.5" wheels and 33x12.50 tires and he had a 4" IFS lift kit and still had rubbing. He ended up installing a 2" body lift on top of the 4" lift to clear the tires.
