add-on light switches

I've added my off-road lights to my roof rack recently and am about to wire them up. The wiring kits came with some cheezy stick-on micro switches, and I don't want to use them. I wondered if there were some switches that fit real nice into the knock-outs in my dash to the left of the steering column (sp?)

Yes, you can get factory switches that look great, work well, and fit perfectly. The part number I have is for the older (discontinued switches), but I'm sure someone will chime in with the current part number.

Check out Corey's site - he migh have the part number on his site.

Here is a pic of the older style switches. The newer ones are very similar, but use a small, round, amber indicator rather than the large rectangular one.

So sorry Bob, I had to take advantage of this rare oppertunity!

In all seriousness, OEM switches are great and I would probably use those over anything else. They were designed to work in your truck so they will work great. So if you can $$ them, get them.

with any aftermarket accessory pulling more than 5 or so amps i would put on a relay.

expecially 400watts of lights (400/12 = 33amps)

for 30-40 amps i would think #10 would do it.

I got a switch similar to the one toyota above out of a 95 nissan pathfinder in the junkyard. The pic is kinda blurry but it is in the middle.

It was free and they should be fairly abundant...

The actual switch can handle several sets of lights... the relays are what you need to be careful of. The switch basically just completes the circuit - the relay is what will trip if there is too much draw. I've had 300+ watts on a single switch, but each set of lights gets its own relay and fuse.

I've got a buddy at the dealer here. He usually gives me a pretty good discount. So, I'd been told that the rule is two 100W lights per relay, and one relay per switch. Is this true or not? I'd like to put all four 100W lights on two relays, on one switch. Will that work?

Check Boater's World and West Marine for switches. Seriously heavy duty, nice switches that have to be SUPER tough for marine application...

All my Rockers came in. They fit in with a little coaxing (READ: PUSH HARD). They look great w/ 3 of those rockers, a walmart LED Rocker, and a pair of momentary pushswitches all bundled together.

Typical Bosch-style headlight relays can handle 30 amps, you can also get 40 amps versions. Relays don't "trip", per se, due to high current. That would be something like a circuit breaker. You would want a fuse or breaker for the relay to protect it and the wiring from a short circuit. One switch can turn on many relays, though and one relay can turn on many lights, up to it's current handling capacity.

strap22 works there. I ordered my switch from them, fast service and cheap price. Around $7.00 I think.

Yeah, I really need to get a couple of these switches and get these lights going. I really could have used them a couple nights ago. Me and a buddy went and did a little wheeling and I realized it gets dark really early now! The weather has been abnormally warm here and I guess I forgot it's almost THANKSGIVING!!
