Speedo Gear inside Tranny (not the plastic one)?

I did some searching, and didn't see any posts which described the gear inside the tranny that drives the plastic speedo gear, which in turn drives the cable/speedo.

So, my speedo quit working out of the blue last week. I checked the cable while driving and did not turn. I then took the cable out of the trans and checked that both ends turned freely, and they did. I figured that narrowed it down to the speedo gear, which pulls right out of the trans. Well I pulled it out, and it looks good to me (please ignore the boogerd up threads, it was a pain to get out):

I put it back in, jacked up the rear end, put it in gear and let it idle. I checked this gear, and id did not turn at all. So, I am guessing that whatever gear that is inside the trans that drives this plastic gear is the problem. Is anyone familiar with this, and know how involved the repair might be? Its a '91 2wd 5spd 22re base model.

Thanks!
