Guys,

There's a few articles on CB installations in the Tech section that addresses most if not all of your questions.

Edit: what I meant to say is that there are links to Firestik articles in most of the write ups including mine:

I think the bumper would be my first choice. I figure I would use the firestik model K-4A stud mount. Drill a hole in the top of the rear bumper then secure the stud through the hole and attach all the wires from the underside of the bumper. It would be a nice clean install and you could easily remove the antenna if you don't plan on using it.

My only concern like I was saying before you won't want to use a spring since it will end up hitting the truck. Not sure how much abuse the antenna can take. I'm guessing it would be fine without the spring as long as you don't hit anything.

The picture you drew of the antenna: Are you saying that is in the bed or off the bumper? I picture it just like that though.

hmm, sorry about that...

Through the pic I meant in the bed, on the railing, right behind the cab.

... and as far as the rear bumper goes. I was actually thinking of mounting it on the SIDE of the bumper and not on top.

As far as springs go, I'm still not sure what kind of flex is involved and how much a tennis ball nullifies.

Heck, I don't know much at all

you know, it just occurred to me... with the antenna right behind the cab it looks like a remote control car

HaHA. That is too funny.

Why do you think you would want to mount it on the side of the bumper? Just wondering. I figure on top of it through the plastic cover and through the metal bumper for good grounding.

I found this on the web. This is what I'm thinking except with a firestik...I like the looks of those better.

Just make sure you can still put your tailgate down...

Maybe I'll try and use the fasteners already in place for the tie down in the rear of the bed. I hate to drill holes in my new truck.

You know I was thinking about mounting from side of bumper and then zip tie or something to my rear light guards.

But wouldn't that affect the SWR too???

Dammnit, I need to make more trucker and electrician friends...

Yea I suppose you could do that. I don't know if that would affect the SWR but my guess is that it wouldn't be that much.

I think I've decided on using one of the standard mounts from firestik and modifying it. I will make it work so that it can be placed behind the tiedown hook in the back of the bed. Gotta take a look to see if that will work but I think I can do it.
