Transmission Leak on a '95 5spd 4runner?
Hey guys quick question on a concern I have w/ my 1995 4runner 5spd 3.0V6. The truck has about 173,000 miles on it so it doesn't suprise me but the other day when I was changing my oil I noticed the under side of the tranny was wet, I wipped it off and it looked to be tranny fluid. I don't think the leak is that bad at all, but I think the cause of leakage may be a bad gasket in the tranny. I was planning to have the tranny fluid changed it on it soon so should I go ahead and get a new gasket? The thing that concerns me is not that gasket cost that is cheap, but the labor is what scares me because they will have to drop the tranny to change the gasket. Please give me your opionons on what I should do and let me know how much you think it'll cost to change the gasket.
Thanks,
Sadiq

"most likely leaks are coming from the rear main seal. it does involve dropping the tranny so if you need a new clutch nows the time to do it."
I think I have this same problem. Is the "rear main seal" towards the front of the transmission? How many hours would this job take if all I was doing was replacing the "rear main seal"?

I think my truck is leaking transmission fliud out of the "rear main seal" but I am not positive.
1) Is this posible or can only oil leak from the rear main seal?
2)After doing a search on "rear main seal" I found that
a)many people have rear main seal leak and thay are not big deal.
b)a rear main seal leak will cause oil to get into your clutch area and destroy your clutch and fly wheel.
Which is true?
Am I too confused to help?

The rear main seal is behind the flywheel and keeps ENGINE OIL inside the engine. Your transfer case takes GEAR OIL and is sealed from the motor. Chances are, your leak is coming from one of 2 places. First would be the transfer case output shaft seal, front or rear. Look at where the drive shafts connect to the transfer case and see if there are leaks coming from there. Second, could be at the top of your transmission or transfer case where the shift levers are seated. It could be leaking down your transfer case and leaking that way. I had this exact problem.
Go to the car wash, and degrease the transfer/tranny. Drive it about a half hour or more to get things good and hot, and then grab a flashlight and get a good look to see where the oil is coming from. Report back here when you found where the leak is coming from.

To replace the rear main seal, you have to take the whole transmission and transfer case off of the engine, and remove the flywheel. Now is a good time to replace the clutch and bearings. Not a very difficult job, but requires a good set of tools, hands and arms of a contortionist, and a good transmission jack with ratchet straps. Should only take a few hours.

Thanks for the help Adam F. Well I forgot to mention it is a 2wd so there is no transfer case. Therefore it must be the second option you listed "Second, could be at the top of your transmission or transfer case where the shift levers are seated. It could be leaking down your transfer case and leaking that way. I had this exact problem" How did you remedy this problem? Replaced the rear main seal? The truck had the clutch replaced 10k miles ago. I took the truck to the car wash and pressure washed these parts but did not inspect them in time to pin point the leak I will did it again. Pin point the leak and report back. Thanks again for the help.
