67K is not an old motor.... definitely not at risk of problems from a switch to synthetic unless the previous owner did most of his 67K miles in the first 2 gears. I've switched to synthetic oil in every used car I've ever purchased(anywhere from 57K to 96K miles on each of those 4 used vehicles that I've purchased in my lifetime) and never had any problems with oil leaks, or any motor problems at all for that matter(knock on wood!)
It's the oil filters job to catch harmful debris in the oil so that it's not recirculating through the system and increasing wear. The main problem with old oil isn't that it's dirty, it's that it starts to break down from wear and the presence of the gas and other remnant biproducts of combustion(carbon, etc.) in the oil, which reduce it's ability to effectively lubricate the motor. Synthetic oils are more resistant to this breakdown efffect, allowing you to run them longer without being at much risk of additional motor wear.
The main thing you want to watch out for if you run extended oil change intervals is a dirty and low quality oil filter. Mobil 1, Purolator Pure One and Amsoil oil filters are some of the best out there. I go with Purolators because they are the best bang-for-the-buck filter and can be purchased at any Pep Boys.
