I had a thought. Do you guys first think I should get some steelies and some 285 MT or regear? Obviously tires/wheels would be cheaper...but, what are your opinions?

Regearing with stock tires is nice, alot more torquey, but your gas mileage will suffer a bit.

So many people have gone 285/75 on the 5vz and not regeared and said it wasnt bad.

So if you can deal with being sluggish for a while go tires and wheel, but regearing then tires would be really nice.

I currently have 4.56 on 32's and i am giong to a 255/85 next so once i do that it will be very nice.

I would do the tires first and see if you can live with the change. Gearing is expensive and even more expensive if the new setup isn't working for you.

I have 285's and wouldn't think of regearing ever. Its not a race truck by no means but it does well with keeping up with the cars on Interstate 95

I already have 285's. I know I can live with the change. My debate is road tires and off road tires (2 sets) or using my Nittos as both and regearing to 456's.

I think there is no right answer. If I had to change my tires and rims each weekend as I headed out on a trail I'd go nuts, especially because it is almost every weekend.

I re-geared (excuse me, am in the process of regearing) because I offroad a fair amount. I noticed the truck can't make it up steep steep hills unless its in 4low when I'm loaded down. (I'm talking about the mining roads in colorado when I'm loaded down for a 6 day trip)
I also noticed the tranny shifting all over the place when going up hill. I spend a fair amount of time and effort trying to get it to stay in one gear by massaging the gas pedal etc.

Because all of this added up to excess wear on the tranny, my patience, and I just chunked out my rear ring and pinion. It was the right time to regear for me.

I think every persons case is different. I never would have if I didn't offroad frequently. Too much money if its not going to be used.
