He has a 2000 4Runner, that would make it either the 3rzfe or 5vzfe. (he mentioned a belt, that would indicate the 5vzfe) Both are non interference engines. On an interference engine, if you break the timing belt/chain, there is a chance that the valves will "interfere" with the pistons. Basically the valve will smash into the pistons, breaking or bending the valves, and denting/chipping or even shattering the pistons. On non-interference engines there is sufficient clearance between the valves and the pistons so you don't have to worry about contact.

Not a stupid question at all. It's something that EVERYONE needs to know about their vehicles. The 22re is an interference engine, and can/will cause major damage if the chain breaks. 3vze is non-interference. I don't know about the newer generation motors.

Wow i did do this a while back, i was driving and all of a sudden it just stop! The stupid thing is when i opend the hood i didn't check the belt, all i didn't was check battery connection and then i tired to jump start it like 3 times and it didn't start so then i finally saw that my belt was all torned up towed the car to my house and then fixed it, i cost about almost $500.00 for all new toyota parts, belt, water pump (gotta say the water pump bented) 2 tensioner and then it was all set. but after i replaced everything no nocking nothing, gotta say i was lucky to have a non interference engine
