Steering/Brake Click in Reverse

Hi Guys,

I am hoping someone can help me out with an issue I am experiencing with my 2000 4Runner Limited. Lately, I have noticed a loud clicking or popping sound only in reverse and only when applying the brake and turning the wheel at the same time. I should state that I can still hear a noticeably subdued version of the click (though almost inaudible) when simply applying the brake, still in reverse, but without steering. I can best compare the sound of the click to the sound the front end makes when engaging/disengaging 4WD. I can also feel the click through the brake pedal.

The sound disappears after the car has warmed up and I can't ever duplicate the sound for the mechanic. I have had it into the shop 3 times now for the click and they can't find anything wrong. After multiple searches on the site, I have had the mechanic inspect the usual suspects (CV's, U-joints, brakes) and they all came back with a passing grade. This is really starting to annoy me, as it seems to be getting worse, and I fear that I am doing more damage by driving it this way. My only thought is that perhaps the calipers are starting to stick, but I am not sure that steering would make that worse? Any thoughts?? Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

diagnosing a sound over the Internet is a challenge. If you are tech savvy perhaps you could post up an audio/video clip so we can all hear it.

Can you narrow down the click to the front or rear?

It's good you are getting after it before it becomes a real issue, if it only happens first drive of the day then perhaps it can be left at a shop overnight. Then you show up in the morning and show the mechanic what you are hearing.

Just as a guess I will throw out the idea that perhaps it is a U joint or drive shaft connection. What that would have to do with steering and braking does not seem logical...

Ive got it too, to me its more of a loud "dink" noise, like hitting a railroad tie with a hammer. Its been doing it to me for over 5 years, and have had the brakes replaced numerous times. Its probably not a huge deal, looks like lots of others experience the same thing too

I have clicks but only when im steering and idling or going in reverse. It sounds more like a creaky floor though, not exactly clicking. I also dont notice it after the truck has warmed up. My brakes are in horrible condition right now, but I dont think it has anything to do with them. Like Ron said it's probably something to do with your driveshaft. For mine I would guess it has to do with my steering components, but the scope is too broad to narrow it down right now.
