School me on 3rd gen 2wd stuff.
Have the chance to snap up a few parts. All from 2001 4runner 3.4 2wd
Rearend non locker remember 2wd.....wahts diff from the 4wd unit. I know springs are shorter on 01 than 99....width? diff? Need help. Searched.
The 2wd auto trans. 3.4 remember.........Same trans as my 2011 2.7 prerunner auto? can it be converted to adapt to transfercase and still fit 2.7? Are bellhousings different 3.4 and 2.7?
Hood. The hoods same or was it just a grill swap from 99 to 01?
Thanks in advance. I can get all this for cheap.....wrecked runner...so I know tranny was working..otherwise it wouldnt of got smoked. (in theory)

I know very little about late models. I do happen to know ALL(2WD or 4WD) 96+ 4Runners(w/o e-lockers) use a strange "hybrid" diff, if you can call it that. It looks like a T100/Tundra/Tacoma diff on the outside, but has the pre-96 V6/Turbo 4-pinion differential on the inside. The ring and pinion gears(or rather just the pinion gear) are different than pre-96 diffs though. Because the pinion gear has 30 splines, vs. the 27 spline pinion gears from pre-96 diffs(4 cyl. and V6/Turbo).
The axles are 60" wide and, unlike most other late model(and most pre-96) 2WDs, have 6 lug axle shafts(same as 4WDs). 2WD Prerunners, T100s, and Tundras also have 6 lug axle shafts(but different diffs).
And that's about it. I know, pretty trivial stuff. Good to know just in case though.
All taken from Erik's Toyota Differential Info page. So you definitely don't have to take my word for it on any of it.

I appreciate you sharing your knowledge. You got drivetrain and suspension down for sure. You can be a huge resource.
So at best I have a spare rearend for my 99 runner. (theoretically I could steal the 99 elocker rear end swap this in....and swap elocker diff into 2001 prerunner....am I right?
And then really is the 3.4 2wd trans a direct swap for the prerunner 2.7 if I cook the trans?
I guess i could always sell them. Just too cheap to pass up.

Double check the trans code on the door, but I'm thinking not. I "think" that your prerunner uses a A750 5 speed, while the older trans will probably be some form of A340, probably an E variant. That's not 100% sure as far as your prerunner goes, but I'm 100% on the older being a A340.

From the link in my previous post:
The T100/Tundra/Tacoma diff
All 2wd and 4wd T100's, '00-06 Tundra's, and ?? Sequoia's use a newer/stronger 8" 2-pinion diff. Tacoma 4x4's and Tacoma PreRunner's that don't come with the electric locker (aka "non-TRD), as well as V6 Tacoma 4x2's also came with this diff.

Electric Locker
These locking diffs can be retrofitted into 8" diff axles if the axle housing is modified (see this article for more info). It cannot be easily retrofitted into a T100/Tundra or open-diff Tacoma style axle housing because the mounting bolt pattern is smaller. It "could" be done by an axle builder by doing major work to the mounting flange, but that is not really a practical option.
