I'm currently doing an engine swap in my 98 4runner (3.4L V6) and was curious whether I should pull the transmission as well and line up the transmission with the new engine outside of the 4Runner versus inside. Does anyone know if it's worth the effort to pull the tranny?

I threw a rod in my current motor (hole in oil pan and block). I ordered a remanufactured engine and doing the swap. My Haynes manual doesn't say if I should but a handful of friends have told me that it might be easier to pull both.

if its a manual i might pull it all together or at least unbolt the tranny and move it back enough to get the input shaft out of the clutch otherwise you will have more of a PITA moving the engine forward off of it when you lift it out. If its an auto i would just unbolt the trans and leave it there.

I would consider removing the transmission and just bolting the engine up first, then putting the trans back.

If it's an automatic, then leave the trans in place and simply drop the engine in.

Pulling a whole powertrain is a serious PITA (read: heavy cumbersome and you'll definately smash something) and not recommended, except for FWD powertrains in small cars.

Besides, how the heck do you suppose the xfer case is going to squeak past everything?

When i swapped my engine, I left the tranny in place. Don't make the project any larger then necessary. Mine is a 5 speed by the way.
After the radiator is out, it's very easy to do.

I just pulled my 5vz and left the tranny in place. Just take off the dust cover on the bottom of the bellhousing to get at the 6 bolts holding the torque converter on. Then take the main bellhousing and starter bolts out and disconnect the wire harness. It is a tight fit getting at the TQ converter bolts between the front diff and the tranny - but I was able to do it without dropping the diff. Also, in order to have room to slide the motor out, I had to remove the radiator which is also very straight forward.

Leave the tranny in place and just swap the engines......much easier.
