Lockers: What Years?
#2
4Runners started in 96 and was available through 2000. In 2001 they dropped it for the traction control system. I have no clue on Tacomas, but all TRD package Tacos have them including the Prerunners.
Your runner has a 8" rear. That matches other 4Runners and maybe Taco Prerunners. It does NOT match the TRD Taco 4WD since they have a 8.4" rear.

Actually it does. The TRD Taco with the locker is an 8" rear end. Also, the locker could be optioned in the Taco without the TRD package. Any Taco with the locker has the 8" rear end. The Taco's that don't have the locker are 8.4" rear ends. The locker can not be put in a 8.4" rear end.
Another way of distinguishing a 8" from a 8.4" is the oil drain plug. On the 8" rear end, the oil drain plug is on the drivers side of the vehicle. On the 8.4" rear end, the oil drain plug is on the passenger side of the vehicle.
Hope this helps.

Hmm ya know how they make different gears for 4cyl and V6. Well can you use the V6 gears and 3rd member with a 4Cyl engine providing everything is set up right? (Will the gears work okay?)

What is a center locking diff? I saw it on the sequoa too and was curious to what it was.
Also, is the VSC and traction control, and also the Downhill stability control better than just a locker? Petersons 4wd seemed to really like it in the 4Runner and Lexus 470(winner of Truck of the year) but they liked the Lexus because of the shiftstyle of transfer case (stick instead of button).

a center diff lock sends equal power to the front and rear driveshafts. when it's unlocked, it's like All Wheel Drive (safe to use on pavement), when it's locked it's like true 4 wheel drive.
it's nice, but no substitute for a rear locker. same with vsc.
