While we're discussing the does and don'ts of proper 3M Scotch Brite use allow me to tell you guys from experience that you shouldn't use this stuff to clean a marble bathtub or any bathtub at that. I did two weeks ago and felt the wrath of the wife, actually she laughed at me for being so stupid. I scrubbed through the clear coat stuff on the out side and started sanding away the marble or acrylic or whatever it is underthere only to starting making the dark stuff inside show through. it's a new house and we just had it built 3 years ago. so lesson learnt, don't use it in the bathroom either. I guess that stuff is only good for prepping copper tubing before it's sweated.

I am beggining to think I shouldn't even bother to come to this board anymore , no offense but it is a 4runner, which IMO shouldn't be babied and should have imperfections, there is nothing wrong with trying to keep your vehicle looking nice, but come on, forget about it. It won't come out. It's not like it's a good bumper anyways, it's a pos as all stock bumpers are. I would use it as an excuse to get a better bumper, one that won't need replacing after you wash it with a brillo pad . I guess this board has more 3rd and 4th gen owners which tend to care about these things more than 1st and 2nd gen owners, in my experience. On a side note I did the same thing the 1st time I washed my 87 4runner, except on the paint. You will eventually not even notice it, that was about a year ago and I can't find the spots anymore. So just ignore it and it will go away. Just my .02 cents.

I agree w/ 1877... dude, let it go. I think it's ok to have "pride in your ride", but really man. When the wife got the new Tacoma in 97 we tried for a while to keep it spotless... then I put the first tiny dent in it Yeah!!! finally broke it in! Just buy a new bumper if it bothers you that bad:cry: Oh, and the wife with blackeyes joke... I laughed

Nothins wrong with keeping your ride nice and new, I for one wheeled my 96 Black Pathfinder weekly and had it looking showroom new people where amazed at the mirror reflection and only days before I hade mud all over it, all my vehicles are that way, I feel their an extension of me, accidents happen and their are dings and scratches that might not come out but when you spend your money on such so called toys what do you expect.

The same could be said for people who change their oil way to frequently and use synthetic, who really wants a car with several hundred thousand miles on it I don't but.

I for one am a perfectionist when it comes to cleanliness. I like to keep my rig looking presentable.

And I agree with EDGE that your vehicle is a part of you and when something happens to it...you are pretty pissed off.

But one thing all of you should know about me...men beating women will only make mad and lose respect for them.

In now way have I lost respect for you Lifer, I'm just saying in general. I have seen too many of my friends go through that...

I am no expert on scratched chrome but I do have a dented bumper and intend to replace it. But if I had the cash sittin around I would jump up to an ARB but...stock bumper is all I can afford so...thats what I'm gettin'!

I'm rather new here so maybe out of line, but I've seen this kind of thread happen a bunch of times. Somebody asks a legit question and thread takes a decidedly different turn without ever addressing the original purpose. I wish the moderators would move the thread to "off-topic" when it happens - I just read the whole thing looking for how to remove scratches from chrome and got maybe 2 hints.

Not trying to discourage the conversational nature of this board, but aren't there more appropriate places to put a debate over a PI joke?

I will leave all the previous flaming alone and just deal with helping you get out the scratches.

The stuff that works the best for me is called Wenol. You can buy it several places but I get it from Summit Racing and it is pretty cheap and VERY effective. If the scratches are deep you may need to either sand em out or just live with the really deep ones. The Wenol will definately take out the smaller ones. If you do use a power buffer, try not to build up any heat with it or the finish won't be quite as nice. One tube will certainly do the bumper for sure.

It comes in several "grits" but it is the one in the orange tube you are after.

PS Remember worst case you can just go to the junk yard and pick up a used one.

I think I'm going to try the MAAS stuff that fishenman talked about up a couple posts. I some places around the house I think it might help with.
