How far can I go?

I was heading over to the "outlaws" the other day and my low fuel light came on. I was only about 10 Km's away from a gas station so I was okay but it made me wonder how far I could get before the inevitable. Anyone have any idea?

i guess i've taken it pretty far. i've gone 25 miles right after it fell below the E slash. it took just about 18 gallons after that, and it's only an 18.5 gallon tank, so i couldn't have gone too much further.

i've never run out of gas, but i might just have to try to beat that record somday.

isn't running out of gas on a fuel-injected engine bad?
I heard that somewhere but never found out why.

EDIT:
For all you wisecrackers... apart from being stranded, is there a downside to it?

I've heard it's bad also to run out of gas on a fuel injected engine. The closest I've ever got was when I put in 16.9 something gallons. I know that the gas tank is right around 17 on my truck, but I'm not sure what it is exactly.

Well, you guys are more gutsy than I am. I've calculated that I could go another 50 or so miles once the little low gas warning pump light goes on but I fill it up anyway.

I've run it down to 2 gallons in the tank, I think.

when you really low on gas your fuel filter start to suck up all the dirt at the bottom of the fuel tank, depending on how dirty your fuel tank is it may clogg up your fuel filter.:pig:

my low fuel light comes on with 5 gal left. there is a TSB about the fuel gauge not reading accurately but I have no other symptoms, so I'll just make a mental note of the odo when the light comes on

Gasoline is also the only lubricant and coolant for the in tank fuel pump. No gas=dead fuel pump pretty quick. Not to mention the trash at the bottom of the tank was the last stuff it took in I can see why people who run close to empty all the time may have a higher chance of fuel pump failure.
