High milage 3rd Gen 4Runner
How many miles is "too many" when looking at a 3rd gen 4Runner? I'm thinking that over 100k there might be significant maintenance to perform. Any ideas what I should be looking for?

Maintenance records speak a thousand words. Without proof, I wouldn't even consider something over 100K (unless you really trusted their word).
I recently purchased a 97 4Runner to get the supercharger off it. It had 197K miles on it, and had been supercharged for 100K miles (with no fuel/timing mods). This just goes to show you the stength and durability of these vehicles when they are taken care of, even with a blower on them and improperly tuned motor. He had impeccable records on the rig; always serviced at the dealer. That is the only reason I bought it, snagged the supercharger, and put it back to stock. When I sold it I could confidently talk about the vehicle to prospective buyers because I had a stack of maintenance receipts to show them.
Don't get sloppy and get yourself into something with high mileage if the history is a mystery.

Check the rear axle seals since that can be a common issue if the breather on the axle gets clogged. If those are leaking you will likely also have to replace the rear brake shoes.

I have about 165k and it runs like a champ.. will have it til about 250k. My previous 89 sr5 pickup was a different story. I was very young and it was my negligence that I blew the engine, tranny and a long list of probs. That's another story, though.

Bought my Taco w/ 117k...now at 142k, runs great day in and day out. I know its not a 4Runner, but I did buy it with some miles on it.

100k is nothing...my cousin has an '89 Tacoma with 489,xxx on it...he bought it when it had 25k on it...it runs just as well as my '99 with 98k on it.

I purchased my 97 4Runner a few weeks ago with 137K miles and still runs great. I only bought this specific 4Runner because it was a Limited, fully loaded w/ e-locker, and really great price.
