Talking First Gen 4Runner $600.00 Ready or Not?

Hello Everyone!

I am contimplating a purchase of 1st Gen 4runner here's the specifics:

1987 195,000, Power window passenger side no motor no door panel,Back Tailgate wrecked, Both corners of rear fender panels slightly dimpled, Silicone on front window, Hood sun scorched, Stock rims locking hubs and some oil leaking from Trans Box. Have not test driven has tags from May 2000!

$600.00 is the final price after initial listing of $1250.00 I am aware that engine work is in order along with the body parts especially the tailgate was quoted $600.00 for used one. How much do you Fist gen Toyota owners think I will have to invest in $$ to get this Runner resurected!

Also How about tips vehicle inspection and test drive. What to look for? Like water in the radiator= Bad head gasket etc. Thanks You 1st Gen Fans!!

I would mention checking the tailgate window motor, that is always trouble as well as the mechanism to raise and lower it. I mention this because if the current innards are working.....KEEP THEM. They are expensive. Otherwise make sure these work on the new one also.

If you need replacement panels or parts check www.car-parts.com for great selection and decent prices.

Is it a 4 or 6cyl? The 4 is slightly more reliable in these years. I am sure you are aware of the recall on the v6 head gaskets.

The siding around the back is pretty brittle inside so you might want to check that out. As far as replacing it- I plan on something other than stock.

Check out the CV boots on the front axles for rips and check the 4wd system, lock the hubs, check high and low range. (Of course do this all on loose dirt to protect your drivetrain)

My 4runners hub were destroyed by the previous owner. I upgraded to Warn hubs and am very pleased.

That's all I can think of for now. First Gens are fun and that's a good price for a fixer.

I'd expect to put at least 1-2000 into it to be honest. But even 2600 is fair price and once you fix em their pretty reliable.

I thought the V6 didn't make its debut until 1988?

I say this having an 88 first gen V6.

I would look at it like this. If the cosmetcis are rockin but the motor is toast...It could be worth it. If the drivetrain is killer, but the cosmetics are failing, it could be worth it. But if you have to drop a bunch of money into both, then I would pass. Look at the good parts of it. If those are worth salvaging then it is a good buy. A good buy isn't based on price. You need to look at what you are planning to keep on it and if that is worth it to you.

then again 600 is really cheap....hard to pass up

Yeah, I'm pretty sure ilion is right about the six starting in 88 but a few might have snuck in to late 87's. Don't know for sure. And I agree deathrunner that $600 is cheap. If a vehicle runs at all it is pretty much worth $600. Add 4wd on top of it and you're getting a decent value. Neoman, what are you going to do with it? If you are just going to trail run it and generally beat it, the dents and dings don't matter too much. And mechanically the 1st gens are easy to work on. I hope to NEVER give mine up.
