burfield joint???

Everytime my friend and I go wheeling, he's always rapping in my ear about how my burfield joints are going to eventually give out. He says that's just the nature of them. I have not found anything in the "search" about burfield joints. While I value my friends wrenching and wheeling knowledge, I just wish he would shut up about it. BTW, his CJ has had more down time than the neighborhood ho! Can anyone enlighten me on burfield joints???

BTW you don't have them in your rig. Toyota used them up to 97 in the LC but quit using them on the trucks /runners back in 85 with the last solid axle.....they aren't on IFS.

And that info from pbb is now a little different......Longfields are only going to be sold through dealers and not direct and the garantee is no longer there. There was just a whole long series of posts on that very thing over on PBB.

Only reason I read it is because I have a 96 LC with birfields and I just did a total front end seal job and that's when I learned about them.

Is there any websites out there that could show me the difference between birfield joints and what is on a 96runner? Just for curiousity sake.

Actually if someone wants to get technical our CV joints are just a double ended birfield.

some more:

Actually it's not a double ended birfield. It's two tripods one at each end acting independently......one at the hub and one at the outer shaft from diff.

yes, birfieds are only found on solid axle toys, suzuki's, and subaru's.

fj birfs are much stronger than the mini truck ones i have, and boy do i wish they were interchangeable. o well, longs are on my list.

Pre '86 mini truck and Runner birfield joints are about as strong as Dana 30 U joints that your friend's Jeep probably has. Upgraded birfields are called Longfields (Bobby Long) or Marfields (Made by Marlin of Marlin Crawler fame) Marfields and Longfields are somewhere between Chrome-Molly Dana 44 and Dana 60 U joints on Jeeps in terms of strength. A '96 Runner has Constant Velocity joints (CVs). Very similar to Birfields but they flex up and down as well as side to side with steering and have a rubber boot to keep dirt out. Birfields only move side to side with steering and have a metal cover to keep dirt out. CVs are larger and much stronger than stock birfields. U joints have no cover and rely on O rings to keep dirt out.

My '85 Subaru has Double Offset Joints. I've never torn them open but I bet they are just like the Tulip style inner CVs on early IFS Toyotas. There are two of them on each Subaru shaft rather than the one tulip and one captured ball style joint on Toyota trucks.

That's probably more info than you needed. Just tell your friend you don't have Birfields.

Just so you guys know Bobby Long is NO LONGER selling these direct! This is to bad because the price just went from $185 each to $215 each. Also noteworthy is that the warranty no longer exists eigther.
The only good news is they are availiable through
www.rockbuggysupply.com (alan the owner is a great guy)
www.camoware.com (this is a popular pirateBB members' wifes company-also nice people)
, and also through www.marlincrawler.com (what can you say Marlin rocks)

Although most of this sucks I can honestly say that Bobbys' superbirfs hold up very , very well. It is hands down the best thing aside from the dual case adapter that has been made for toyotas'.
