Doing it this way can leave alot of room for error. Be sure you only jack 1 tire up like rock slide said, and then have someone spin the tire 20 times. Divide the number of drive shaft rotations by 10, and that should be your ratio (divide by 20 for the spins, and multiply by 2 because one tire is fixed).

The more times you spin the tire, the less error you introduce (unless you mis-count the rotations).

Or maybe i have 3.5 because i didn't divide by 2 and multiply by 20.

Look man, I'm just trying to help. That was the way I was told by people here to check my gear ratio and it worked, and it makes sense by the mechanics.

By just spinning once, you have to tell the difference between 1.75 turns, or 1.86 (for a 3.72 ratio), or 1.71 turns for a 3.42 ratio. My point was that it is easier to count a couple extra rotations than try to discern a few degrees of rotation. But that's just me.

So how do you interpret the results of your test? What does 1 3/4 turns correspond to?

On a side note...Not all 3rd Gen with Lockers have 4:30 gear ratio if basing on the axle code on the door jamb. This one reads A03A. Mine is Locked with A04A axle code...could it be because this truck has a manual tranny? Explain explain???

So giving the VIN to the dealer is still a possibility to be wrong?

Liny, that gear size sounds right for you 4Runner...probably why you're getting such low mpgs w/ those size tires & rims.
