Another timing belt question
I've done searches but can't seem to find a definitive answer. I'm sorry if this is a worn out question.
I have a '99 4Runner with 82,000 miles and thought the engine can go 90,000 miles before the timing belt needs to be changed. From previous threads that I've read here, some say to change it at as early as 60,000 miles. Is it really true that the belt can go to 90K?
Also, is is really true that if the belt breaks, the engine simply stops without any engine damage?!

Its possible your timing belt could last you 200,000 miles b4 it breaks, but do you want to take that chance.Now on the list i have it show that your engine is a non-interference engine. Meaing if the belt breaks you wont bend the valves up.
I had a timing belt break on my 90runner. I put everything back to TDC and replaced the belt and it ran fine till someone stole it:cry:

For What It Is Worth...
I have a 2000 with a v6.
I called this morning to make the Timing Belt replacement appointment. The dealership service rep told me to wait until 90K to do the replacement. He said they started going to 90K in 1999.

Thanks for the replies, guys! I'll just wait until the truck hits 90K. Good to know about the non-interference engine. I was wondering when manufacturers were going to start making these types of engines

The belt will easily last til 90k and likely up to 120k with ease.
It is more of an inconvienece if it breaks while driving (tow $$$, etc.)
I would change it at 90k to 100k

Thank you , MTL, for the response. I had been reading on this other other forums how some had changed their timing belts at 60K and began to mildly panic about my own. I'll probably push it until 100K.

i just hit 100k and i am planning on getting it changed. i got a coupon in the mail for 260 for replacing it. should i have the water pump done too? or is that included in the 30k mile interval checkups?
