I had a 98 Tacoma, and if you're dealing with kids the Runner is the way to go. With the car seat there was no way to properly install it and even if you could squeeze it in there it made the front seat pretty unuseable as it was so far forward.

SUV for me,holds more people, better weight transfer/traction in rear...seats fold down so I can use the cargo area and keeps everything locked up under glass.

But,its no gravel, mulch hauler...If you need that..a bed is what you want.

A 4runner hands down since you have a kid (even if small for now). You will need the rear seat space for the kid seat, and perhaps a person or two on occasion. An extracab will likely be to small and a hassle. Rent a truck or a trailer if you really need to haul a lot.

Double cabs are a bit heavier with less of a bed so I'm sure that help with the stability but a regular cab or a long bed it is noticeable.
Might also be the steering rack bushings on his Taco are gone. Mine were, and the truck wandered on the freeway. Replaced with poly bushings and it rides fine.
