Hey, I have a 92 and it seems as if my shift knob moves as I hit bumps in the road. I wonder why this happens. I had a Corolla and it didn't do it. Anyone have any idea how/why? :fireman:

Vibrating really bad and shuttering? Or just moving slightly when you take a bump?
Mine moves ever so slightly whenever I drive over bumps in the road or speedbumps and things like that (i was told that this is normal), but if it is really shuttering, there is something wrong and you should take it to the dealer. Could be an alignment problem, tires out of balance etc.

I have a 2000 4Runner as well as a 92 and my 2000 shifter vibrates some...also happened in the 99 I had before the 2000. I think it's normal (I hope, at least. )

It's just doing small vibrations, mostly during acceleration I think.
My wife has a habit of driving with her hand on the shifter and it makes her think something is wrong.
Her Runner is new, less than 500 miles on it, and will never be driven off-road.

This is normal.
The shifter is connected to the tranny, the tranny is connected to the frame, and the frame is connected to body, so the shifter kind of floats in there.
The transmision mounts on rubber bushings and that compensates for any vibrations kind of like shocks do.

Jeff:
My first 99 4runner had a shifter that would sway back and forth. Sometimes on a hard bump, I could hear it hitting the gear stop. It was absolutely insane and my wife started freaking out when she saw this.
Needless to say, after a month of taking it up the chain (so to speak) with the idiots at Penske Toyota in Downey, CA, I finally got them to unwind the sale. I can't tell you how much those guys straight out lied to me.
In anycase, knowing what I know now, its the rubber bushing. It should be level with the top, but Toyota bushings sag after even a year or so.
