this site I have 3.58
Your email I have 3.73

Now I am confused. I guess the only way to tell is crack it open.
The model number is the most accurate because those numbers Steve uses in his site actually come from the toyota website. To make matters even more confusing it seems like Toyota was not always accurate on the door sticker as to the original size of the tires when shipped. The best way to verify is to do the revolutions test (ie jack up one wheel, mark the housing and driveshaft, put it in neutral 2WD or T-case in neutral 4WD, and count the revolutions of the driveshaft vs one full revolution of the tire.....if you make the tire go around 10 times, the driveshaft numbers will come out more definitive....ie 4.30 will become 43 revs, 3.91 will be 39.1 revs, etc and you'll easily be able to tell the difference).

That model had 3 options....
VZN185L-GKPGKA 3.909
VZN185L-GKPGKA 4.100 With P265/70R16
VZN185L-GKPGKA 4.300 Option

So unless you have P265/70R16 tires or a locker, then you probably have 3.91 gears.

Model VZN185L-GKPGKA is not to 01-02 specific. My first post I said that I think all 3rd gen lockers are 4.30, but I mean that all the 4.30's were E-locked. Im not to sure on this and all these codes are tricky.

I think that they jammed the 3.90 on those that had the 15" (gearing purposes). I think that all the 01-02's are 3.90 or 4.10's right (depending on either 15" or 16" wheels)? No E-locoker option and Im pretty sure that they were locked.

We need some 01+ guys to chime in here and see what their axle codes are. Anyhow, co4Runner I am trying to say that I think you have a 3.909

I found a few threads going back a ways that do indicate 4.10s do come with lockers optional (good read):
https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f2/3rd-gen-rear-axle-swap-14147/

I think 4.30 gears only came with a locker, but a locker was an option with 4.10s.
Just went out and looked at the tag on the drivers door post.

For my '97, SR5, 4x4, V6, 5speed (per Steve's website)

Model: VZN185L-GKMGKA: 4.100 With P265/70R16

Axle code: A03A

Yep, 4.10 gears with an E-locker were an option.

I remember FOUR WHEELER magazines 4x4 of the year shootout in '97, had a 4Runner equppied mechanically the same as mine.

That article was in large part responsible for me buying my 4Runner, equipped the way it is.

I still like the vehicle enough, that in 8 1/2 years, I haven't found another vehicle I'd rather have.
