3.0L automatic / over drive problem
Anybody else ever have problem with the over-drive on their runners ?
My over-drive works but kind of has a mind of it's own. I know that it will not shift until the runner is warm but occasionally it is stubborn.
Is there a module that controls the over-drive ? I've changed the fluid and filter but still have the problem. What controls the over-drive ?
The transmission is strong and shifts good - the OD is just weird.

Here is some info from:
http://www.off-road.com/toyota/tech/other/4_dts.html
The A340E/A340F/A340H 4-Speed Automatic Overdrive Transmission
This is Toyotas ECT (Electronically Controlled Transmission) automatic. It is used in both 22RE (4wd) models and in the 3VZ-E and 22R-TE (both 2wd and 4wd)
1st 2.804, 2nd 1.531, 3rd 1.000, 4th 0.705 Reverse: 2.393.
The 4WD version (A340H) has a transfer case with low-range gearing of 2.659:1
Models designated A340F have (I think) the VF2A transfer case with a 2.566:1 low range
Someone who asked to be anonymous sent the following info:
The codes breakdown is as follows
A 340 H
A = automatic transmission
3 = 3 series
4 = 4 speed
0 = gear ratio / minor change
H = hydraulic transfer case (includes ECT)
F = mechanical transfer case (includes ECT)
E = Electronic Controlled Transmission (used on 2WD 4Runners, other 2WD Toyota vehicles)
This transmission uses 2 solenoids to control the shifting.
solenoid 1 solenoid 2
1 st = ON OFF
2 nd = ON ON
3 rd = OFF ON
4 th = OFF OFF
The throttle cable is used for line pressure, it can be disconnected and
the transmission will still shift normally.
But if you loose power to your 2 shift solenoid, you will be taking off in
OverDrive.
What you should do is :
Select LOW 1 . (1 st gear) then 2nd ( 3rd gear) then D (over drive)
</Plaintext>

Control of Overdrive
Driving in overdrive is possible if the O/D main switch is on and the shift lever is in the D position. However, when the vehicle is being driven using the cruise control system (CCS), if the actual vehicle speed drops to about 4 km/h (2 mph) below the set speed while the vehicle is running in overdrive, the CCS ECU sends a signal to the ECM to release the overdrive and prevent the transmission from shifting back into overdrive until the actual vehicle speed reaches the speed set in the CCS memory. On this model, if the engine coolant temperature falls below 70°C (158°F), preventing the transmission from up–shifting into overdrive.Problem:
Delayed 1-2, 2-3 or
3-O/D up-shift, or
down-shift from
O/D-3 or 3-2 and
shifts back to O/D
or 3
Possible cause:
Electronic control faulty
Valve body faulty
Solenoid valve faulty
Remedy:
Inspect electronic control
Inspect valve body
Inspect solenoid valve

Any gearing or tire size changes from stock? Either can cause issues with the transmission not wanting to hold O/D.

The only solution is to by-pass the temp-sensor with a switch going into the cabin if you don't mind having the check engine light on go ahead and do this. If you mind you are screwed cause once the ecu detects that code it's not going away and it's not fixable and, trust me this works like a charm.

awesome! I am also having issues...although mine shifts ok but when I shift to Drive from a dead stop it shifts very hard to 1st gear (the drive shaft wiggles and is loose) that's not normal for a rebuilt transmission is it?
MY O/D light does not come on ever...bad bulb??
My speedometer does not work.
I also get a strange vibration when accelerating, it stops when I let off the gas so I am puzzled.
PLEASE help if you have any info or advice! I really need to fix this car so I can go to work. I just had a baby girl july 4th and we all rely on this vehicle! Thank you for any help I can get.
