Progress: 4/17/06
Well, I started off pulling the e-locker 3rd out of the housing( I am getting ready to start welding on the housing and I have really bad luck with welding around electronics)
MAN ARE THESE SHAFTS BIG!
I'm glad I decided to do a tear down on this axle...I found out that the brake shoe was busted
Is there a special tool to remove this piece? I couldn't figure out how to get it apart so I could remove the backing plate.
I finally broke down and started grinding the slag off the rear axle and off the frame. Here is the semi-finished product...
Frame Progress:
I will finish grinding the rest of the crap off tomorrow night. I had to shoot some black paint over the bare metal to keep it from rusting.
Parts didn't arrive today, I did find a shop semi locally that might have a good deal on my "johnny joints" and hopefully some 4.7's!

HA! I didn't even realize that was in the pic! that is/ was the hood off of my 1979 LWB 4x4 Rig(#1308!) the hood says "mean as hell" actually. That rig had dual (w56)trannys in it. Thanks for all the comments! Keep'em comin'!

I'm looking at doing this with my 4Runner but I'm going to use an R150 and an R151 trans.

In order to do want you are talking about you are going to have to have a custom coupler made..23 spline:21 spline....the output of the r150 is 23 and the input shaft of all the trucks is 21 spline...also make SURE that your adapter is exactly the same thickness all the way around or you will destroy the splines due to them not being even...I am still running the duals in my other rig(91 4runner sitting on the 79 LWB frame) it's nice for the gear selection and the fact that I don't need to regear the axles but I'm going to do dual cases 4.7's and 5.29's on this project...GTG....back to the shop to work on my rig(I have to get some more pics for you guys!)

let me be the first to say (in true priate form) you need to fab up some better jack stands ASAP. cinderblocks blow cunks man!
as for the FJ axles, you must be planning on running offset drives somehow? please enlighten us!

double cv's....It's coming off the cinder blocks as soon as I get done grinding on it.

Finally finished grinding the frame. I shot some black paint on it to keep it from rusting up.
I have a bunch of Toyota parts around the house, including this rear frame section from a 2nd gen 4runner. The 2nd gen 'runners had coils in the rear(this one had a 4" Trailmaster lift with coils). I needed to find the upper bucket for the rear coils...put 2 and 2 together and what do you get? Me with a torch cutting the buckets off the old frame.
I was happy to see that the bucket is a 2 part unit...the lower half(the on I needed) is tack welded in 8 places onto frame....not for long though,
Axle time...
A buddy of mine(Grant) lent a hand in helping me measure and make a template for the upper tower to attach the "johnny joint"
Here is what we came up with. And yes it is centered.
Stay tuned, its gonna get good soon!

I've been in talks with Bud about the adaptor. I already have 5.29s so it's not something I'm looking to do right away. I have a buddy that wants my cryo'ed 5.29 e-lockers so I've been toying around the idea some more.
