Nice thread, and very sharp looking truck! Some people buy their vehicles, some lease them, and some people OWN them. Know what I mean!?

bmcghie, it's gonna be the standard stuff... here's a short list: easy on the skinny pedal, reduce rolling resistance, keep everything tuned up and fresh -- air filter, all oils, drivetrain; replace spark plugs, get fuel injectors cleaned, make sure the gas cap itself passes an emissions test (vacuum test), take extra weight out of the vehicle, new headers, open flow exhaust. use the vent rather than open windows. (in general) use the highest practical gear...shift early. get rid of auto hubs and go manual.

the FSM lists culprits in this order (hope i got all 22): fuel leakage, fuel quality, accelerator pedal link, dash pot, clutch, brakes dragging even when released, EGR system, circuit opening relay, distributor, compression, piston ring, valve timing, injectors, cold start system, ECT sensor circuit, throttle position sensor circuit, volume air flow meter circuit, PNP signal circuit, a/c signal circuit, heated oxygen sensor circuit, intake air temp sensor circuit. (phew...)

but, we've got one of toyota's poorer engines... lots of threads showing people getting 12~16, and only a few really exceptional cases of 20+. the best i've ever gotten since my lift was 18.9 mpg, shortly after a tune-up, alignment, chassis lube, new fluids, all that. no one thing will make an astounding difference; you'll need to hit everything and you'll get some kind of improvement. how much, hard to say. i'll hazard a guess that the single best thing i did for my mileage was the hubs.

I am pretty sure the PO stuffed 5.29s in my diffs... and I have no lift. My little 32x11.5 BFG ATs get to 4th gear pretty quick in the city. I can drive it like I stole it in the city, get 16mpg... drive like a grandma on the highway... get 17mpg.

I think it's definitely worth looking at finding some 4.30s and maybe using the money from selling 5.29s to fund the swap.

Thanks for the tips, I may also have to look at my CSI and valve timing. :s

Thanks to everyone for your kind words. I have yet to refuel the truck because I have been riding my motorcycle alot lately to save fuel costs. Times have been tight as you all know. I don't expect the highest possible results because some fuel is offgassing while it sleeps in my garage. Regardless, I will probably fuel up this week and will post the findings.

Haven't posted in a while... building a motorcycle right now in my garage... but the toyota is still going strong. Currently getting just shy of 19 miles to the gallon in the city. I attribute the number being lower than it used to be because I have those Smitty bumpers on there. In other news, I located a mint-condition white Leer camper shell for it in Arizona and will post pictures of it once I get it. Cheers.
