Sorry to hear about your motor. I dont know about Autozones motors, but I have used one of these and if I recall right, they didnt charge a core charge. I had it shipped to my local Oriellys for about $150. Nothing but good to say about their service and quality. Alot cheaper then the big name stores. It is $925 for the motor,sometimes they will have a sale for about $875. I highly recommend them.

Thanks for the heads up. I am going to try out the crank and rods my buddy has first. The machine shop shouldn't charge me for the labor. If I have issues again, I will definately be going with a united motor.

Good news. Dropped the crank and rods off at the machine shop last week. Got a call today that the motor is all done. He is just charging me for the bearings, so that is good.


I have a question for those that have rebuilt these motors. Below is a photo of the head gasket that I had put on the motor when I got it back the first time. Upon tearing it apart this last time I noticed something. There are no holes in the head gasket for the water jackets between the cylinders. Is this normal, or was this the wrong head gasket?

is possible you got the wrong head gasket. some times they block of some of the passages but that looks alot more than what i have seen in the past on some other motors, not 22re

I threw away an old headgasket last week so cant answer now. But that is one reason I do keep the old gasket it to compare to the new one. I did have an over heating problem on a Ford and it wound up being a water hole not getting punched out on the head gasket.

That was a tough problem to find and actually a friend found it for me.

Well I went down to the Toyota garage and bought a head gasket from them. It doesn't have the holes in it either. I guess they just aren't supposed to be there.

Spent all day working on the motor today. Got it in and running. Ended up finding out that the o-ring on the oil pump is leaking, so I'm going to have to pull it apart again. Everything actually went pretty smooth.

If I ever got a motor together right the first time without some kind of leak, I would be worried. Shouldnt be to bad to have to get back in there for the oil ring. Sounds like everything else went well.

Got the oil leak fixed. I pinched the o-ring when I put the oil pump on this time around. Good thing I have tons of leftover gaskets and such from doing so many of these motors.

I adjusted the valves today to what the FSM says, 8 and 10, but they are still loud as hell. Is this just the way the engnbldr 261c cam is? I was reading through other posts on other forums and some say to tighten the gap to 6 and 8. Any thoughts on this?

On a side, sad, note. The AC stopped working. Guess I'm going to have to take it somewhere to get converted over to r134a.

check with engnbldr on what specs to run on the valves. glad you got it done and motor looks clean!!

I sent Ted at engnbldr an email at 6:00am and he replied 11 minutes later. He said they recommend .007 on the intake and .009 on the exhaust for that cam. I am a BIG fan of engnbldr. I wish all vendors I dealt with were this good.

Adjusted the valves. Sounds way better. I also made an appointment to get the A/C converted over to r134a. Hopefully by the end of tomorrow, I will have nice cold air again.

Ted is a great guy. We need more business people like him. Great news on getting the valves adjusted better and the oil leak wasnt to bad of a fix. I dont think you are allowed to get a motor running without some kind of leak. From my experience anyways.

I too have a huge selection of left over gaskets, but you never know when you will need one of them. I am envious of your AC, sorry to see you have to convert to 134, sure do miss the R12. I keep putting it off and now I am paying for it. This has been a hot year for most around the country.

Well... I got the A/C fixed. And adjusted the valves 4 or 5 times. Still kept hearing a tick. After many nights of investigation, I think my dad and I have narrowed it down to the #4 intake valve. I think when the bearings went, that piston may have hit the valve.
So I get to pull the motor apart again.
I so wish I would have just bought a motor instead of trying to fix this one.

It is HICKEY TOUGH TRUCK PRODUCTS. I think they were big back in the 80's. I found it new in the box on ebay for $50 delivered.

I will look them up on ebay. I thought I had one for my runner and it was off of a solid axle truck. They arent interchangeable. Was a surprise to me.
