Yea that day was pretty funny I was going down the trail with a couple buddy's in the truck with me and we come up in his rig and there's no way around and then the door opens and he says he's gonna pull up and turn around and I asked him which way he came from. The second he opened the door and I saw his legs come out and then when he got out he look like Rick Moranis hopping out me and the guys just started busting up. Little did we know a hour down the road he would be saving our butts. I now go suuuuuper slow on hills like that and stay almost on the all the way on the hill now. That experience surly made me want to make my truck more capable watching his truck skirt across a 45 degree angle snow slopped skinny road and my truck hooked to his by tow strap i was sure we were going down and sure enough the bronco saved us I fell in love with first gen Broncos. Got home to see how much they went for and almost crapped my pants I always look for his truck when I'm up there now said he was from hood river and he was an optometrist. He said he was part of a club and he was doing some scouting for the weeks to come.

Besides all of this jibjab. I order
Pitman arm
Idler arm
Tie rods
Wheel bearings
And a moog steering damper
Front end will be solid again!!
Then next month
88 v6 rotors pads and calipers
Can any one clarify if I need only the 88 v6 stuff or will any v6 4Runner stuff work 88-95 ? And I don't need the master cylinder or booster right I can do those down the road.?

So I don't know if I ever put this in here but I put led bulbs in all my interior lighting besides the dash. And a while back my lights wouldn't turn off until I pulled the fuse or disconnected the battery. Then I got it where I didn't have the dome fuse in and if I turned on my running lights all my interior lights would turn on but now they wouldn't so I put the dome fuse back in and eureka they all work as they should now! Love it when things fix them selfs. Still can't figure out what I'm gonna do with my sunroof glass. Plexy glass or some kind of thick plastic I thought about calling the old auto glass places and seeing if they have any old ones. I got free window trim that way on my old pickup when I replaced my windshield

Ok here's a update. Got time to do some work on the truck I replaced the idler arm and steering damper. got the CB fit for the dash. Next is pitman arm and tie rods. Any tips on the pitman? I read it can be a pain trying to get the steering wheel straight. And I want to buy new sleeves for the tie rods. Didn't get those. I have everything to do the wheel bearings except the 54 mm socket so that's gonna happen as well. Here's some pics
<a href="http://s1057.photobucket.com/user/keithwct/media/DFF93010-76F8-4764-A4B2-B5B010BF089D.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1057.photobucket.com/albums/t384/keithwct/DFF93010-76F8-4764-A4B2-B5B010BF089D.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo DFF93010-76F8-4764-A4B2-B5B010BF089D.jpg"/></a>
<a href="http://s1057.photobucket.com/user/keithwct/media/6803CD7B-4D36-45E8-884D-39E3B05E2804_2.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1057.photobucket.com/albums/t384/keithwct/6803CD7B-4D36-45E8-884D-39E3B05E2804_2.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 6803CD7B-4D36-45E8-884D-39E3B05E2804_2.jpg"/></a>
<a href="http://s1057.photobucket.com/user/keithwct/media/4F0A6F9E-D941-4A1D-8FF5-76F83BC05C98_3.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1057.photobucket.com/albums/t384/keithwct/4F0A6F9E-D941-4A1D-8FF5-76F83BC05C98_3.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 4F0A6F9E-D941-4A1D-8FF5-76F83BC05C98_3.jpg"/></a>

And here is a hole that was cut in the body before I got it the guy said the tape is super strong and I believe him it's been on there about a year and I have been all over the woods with this thing. So I actually thought of it as a potential spot for the Antenna mount but I want to stay away from making it easier to break off.
<a href="http://s1057.photobucket.com/user/keithwct/media/67E8696D-6458-4199-899A-304C5E0708F3.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1057.photobucket.com/albums/t384/keithwct/67E8696D-6458-4199-899A-304C5E0708F3.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 67E8696D-6458-4199-899A-304C5E0708F3.jpg"/></a>
I got the wrong mount I believe. I kinda thought having it come out between the tailgate and the rear lights. My reverse lights don't work so I could have it come out In front of that.
Now installing it there is that gonna cause problems with achieving a low swr?
Please any ideas about this. And any tips on doing the pitman and wheel bearings. Ooooooo and I'm looking at new tires probably gonna end up with new 33/12.50 federal cougaria sir maybe mudstars. The thing I'm trying to figure out is what are better in snow and will still be ok to drive through town.
Here's a side by side of the tread there bet similar big thing is I can get it shipped here to my house then go have them mounted or I can go get the federals in a day and have them installed in the same place.

Which mount did you get for the CB antenna? Remember the higher up the better with antennas. It's also good to have as much metal as possible to act as a reflector, but your body style 4runner makes that kinda hard. I mounted mine in the groove between the hood and the fender and it works pretty good.

For the steering stuff, a pickle fork and big hammer with some heat will do wonders.

I'm doing the tie rods today after work the CB antenna mount I think is a jeep window mount not sure I have an idea of where to put it or order another mount but thinking about drilling into the body and painting the mount with bed liner putting it right about the left tail light that way it's on the body and that's the biggest piece of body I just don't know about drilling more holes in her

There's the spot on the body 4holes in a square pattern and the wire will come out by the tail light housing

Well I got pulled over for no license plate light and mine don't work because PO jacked up the wiring so I ran a 3 inch led strip with 3m adhesive strip on the back and stuck it under the plastic Toyota emblem and wired in line with the running lights. Looks good I think these make good interior lights as they are bright enough cheap enough and easy to wire with out even needing another fuse/relay/switch. The wiring got me wondering tho. So in the rear end next to the driver side cargo panel in the rear the harness splits it 2 part of it goes to the tail light and the rest goes where that's where it's all jacked up and seems to be just going no where I assume that's where the alarm was located. I'll post some pics a little later of the new light installed and my wiring set up. I'm feeling like pulling my seats this summer and redoing the carpet and such. Getting some Digi fit weather tech mats for it.

Any one ever tear apart the seats my driver side is kinda broken it's like the upper half isn't on the brackets that keep it in place so it moves right when u try to lean it forwards and backwards

Alright the time has come for me to do some real work to the mountain raider.

Tomorrow I am picking up. A 85 axle no diff for 300 hub to hub with spacers and armored up all ready to go from a good buddy who has constantly pushed me to stay away from wasting money on the ifs. So now begins the fun. In starting a parts list and will hopefully be able to get it done before the end of the summer. I still have my 2nd gen runner to get around in and only work about a mile away from home so my bicycle will be getting put to use as well.
Plans are 4.88 gears grizzly in the rear haven't decided on the front if I want it open or not
This thing still needs to be able to go distance as well as crawl
Probably won't go bigger then 35" tires unless I. Get addicted to big obstacles
Will do the ruf swap with Chevys in the rear
I'm gonna do my best to avoid buying a whole sas kit as I am not made of cash and there are parts everywhere.
In the process of getting a torch right now.
I will most likely have my buddy I'm getting the axle from help me with welding and my brother who's got a Lincoln welder.
My step dads into building cars as well he's in the process of building a 1940 ford right now complete restore so I can most likely get some help from him too.
There are some things I will need to get new and they should be replaced any ways like
Brake lines rotors pads calipers are newish
Drive line of course unless I find some one parting out there's which actually happens a lot here in Oregon
New seals on drive train
Hy steer going in too used

I will be posting a whole list of parts I'm looking for just for a reference here and can hopefully get some input on doing this the best way and most cost effective

While its sitting other things to hopefully get done is a possible seat swap if I can't figure out my driver side seat it's so uncomfortable with the back rest being basically reclined 50%

Maybe a paint job I really like the sr5 scheme I have and like the colors. the black ones with the silver stripes tho look sooooo good. I was kinda thinking about doing the whole thing in a rubberized bed liner with gloss black stripes. Black on black looks good.

Engine stuff I keep thinking about but don't know if I. Really should even bother.
It's got 282k on it. Runs good haven't done a compression test on it. It doesn't burn oil has some leaks tho basically the timing cover and rear main seal and I think main front seal on main crank shaft. But after valve adjustment and new gasket on valve cover I'm barely loosing any oil anymore I also stepped up to 10w40 on the oil. Thing warms up the ac blows cold the temp gauge has always worked but never gone past half way even after wheeling hard and really getting on the gas. The tranny is out of a 92 4Runner and shifts great I'm pretty gentle on the stick just cause I learned to drive on a 2nd gen 4Runner with a slight clutch issue. But I keep thinking about buying a rebuild kit or maybe even a 2nd engine to build up with a rv cam over sized valves the whole yards to throw in it someday when it happens but that might not even be for another 40 thousand miles so seems like money I could put into it else where.

Please post up links to sas builds and great info
Parts lists cheap parts and tricks I am a "noob" doing my best to learn from the best. People like chefyota really inspire me to make a quality rig and help spread knowledge. It's people like that that make the Internet actually worth ur time to learn as I have so much already. I now have no fear when working on this thing simply because I know I'll get it figured out and chances are some one else has had the same problem as well. Tomorrow I'll post up a couple pics of the axle
Cheers

Good deal on the axle. Craigslist and other such places are great for finding parts, but I'm sure you know that. If you aren't in a huge hurry you can build a good rig for a good price.

I wouldn't worry about the motor just yet, you've got other good things to work on now.

Yea kinda how I feel about it. It's just kinda loud sounds like a old truck even after the valve job I'm assuming it's the rockers slapping down on the valves might be a little exhaust leak I did just get the exhaust redone tho from the down down pipe and back with new cat and muffler but still just kinda loud. My 2nd gen is much quieter. Stoked to build a solid axle truck and really have something I take pride in I've been obsessed with Toyotas since I had my first one when I learned to drive. So obsessed that I'm gonna get into the Toyota school in Vancouver!

That's cool that you found a straight axel and will be doing a sas soon! I built my 86' on a really tight budget and did the sas for about half the cost of an IFS Eliminator kit that Trail Gear sells. There were some things I had to buy new ( like high-steer, because I couldn't find anyone selling it used at the time). If you do have to buy parts new, shop around, Lowrange Offroad, Addicted Offroad, and others carry TG parts, but you can usually get them cheaper than going directly through TG, or you might have a shop locally that can get them for you and save you shipping cost. A cheap way to extend your front and rear brakelines is to buy a new rear brakeline, it has a male and female end you can just bolt to your existing lines to lengthen them, it works on both the front and rear. I used a RUF spring setup in front and worked really well. I got a set of rear 2" lift springs for $40. Even if you bought some Old Man Emu 2" rear lift springs brand new it would save you money over buying some from Trail Gear and probably work just as good if not better!
Anyway, look forward to your sas, there alot of good people and threads on here that will help you when the time comes!

Also have a pit man I haven't put in should I sell it and get the fj80? Pitman more research looking for someone's detailed build thread to follow

Yes your wheel bearings will interchange, since the spindles are the same size. Keep your IFS wheel hubs too, with a slight mod you can use your IFS hubs and not have to run wheel spacers. It will make your front straight axel's WMS to WMS (wheel mounting surface) 3" wider to match your IFS rear axel. You can then upgrade your brakes to slotted rotors and ditch the solid rotors that came with your straight axel. You can look at my 86' build thread in my signature, I have info on it. There's a good right up somewhere, ill see if i can find it and post it up. I'm not sure on the FJ80 pitman arm, I used a flat arm. Some of those FJ's used a different style steering box with the pitman arm facing forwards because they were a spring under axel setup.

I found that write up on using the ifs wheel hubs on the straight axel to widen it. There are a few brake upgrade variations in the write up depending on what you are wanting. Towards the end they show how you can upgrade to Tacoma brakes, but you'll need to run 17" wheels. Anyway just thought I'd share some of this info:

Awesome thank you so much. I didn't realize u lived in evens I only live in Portland. The wife and I are talking about moving to Astoria to get away from the herds of people moving here. Today I'm gonna drive the 2nd gen down to Klamath falls for the weekend. When I get back I found a guy with some rear 4 inch lift springs for the rear for 100 bucks. I am assuming I'm most likely going to have to get all the sleeves shock hoops and other stuff that needs to be welded new, spring hanger and such. I have a guy out in mollolla that can make me shackles for cheap at any length. I will be reading ur 86 build thread all the way through. What kinda lift does the ruf swap give the front end?

I used to live in Yakima, which is alot closer to you. A couple years ago we went up to Lincoln City with the kids and did all the tourist stuff up along the coast, went through Ripley's believe it or not, this aquarium, went to this huge airplane museum, Tillamook cheese factory and stuff, lol, it was fun.

On the RUF, the amount of lift depends on the condition of the used springs. Imagine using some old clapped out springs like on the back of your 1st gen 4 runner, probably not going to aicheive much lift, lol. I used some 2" rear lift springs combined with leaves from another set of regular toyota rear leaves. I think I had six leaves total, but I had the extra weight of a ford 302 V8, you might not need that many with a 22re. The lift on my front RUF pack matched the rear 6" AllPro Off-road springs I had on the back pretty well.

Here's the axle hubs n such nice paint job!! Buddy said happened when he was passed out drunk and his buddy's wanted to surprise him hah

But I'm looking at a rebuild kit thing is I have bearings ready it has new seals already just needs things like felts no steering set up gotta get that the 3rd has no gears and it's tapped for a arb. Found a guy locally that I'm pretty sure can fab some tubes jigs and front spring hanger and perch hopefully. I got my bj spacers and diff drop for 60 bucks off of him super nice guy.

I am picking up some Scion tC seats Friday just like the ones chefyota had son hopefully I can follow what he did to get them in. We'll see what I can figure out to get them to fit right. And then I will most likely take my sr5 seats and try and fix the mechanical problem what ever it is basically the back part won't sit up right it's like in a constant gangster lean super uncomfortable unless my seats pulled far forward. I'm still thinking about the ifs hub body mod I think the 11/2 spacer might be a easier way to go.
Money got real tight so I'm just doing what ever I can for now to stay productive with it. Might start doing some interior stuff till I get some
More cash to get parts luckily I found pretty much everything I need locally except the wiper seals and backing plate eliminator. Hopefully starting a new job within the next month driving a truck and working towards my cdl while I'm in school getting ASE certified. 87 Mountain Raider-photo300.jpg this cleaned up pretty well there's still a little bit of paint on there in probably just gonna wipe it down with paint thinner and get the rest of it off. Very excited and anxious and have no money so that's what's going on here I'll post up pics of the seats Friday

Congrats on the new seats, they make driving so much more pleasant when you have something comfortable to sit on, hope the install goes smoothly for you! I have some 2" wheel spacers forsale on the classified forum. $50 for two or $100 for all four. They'd be a 1/2" wider on each side than what your needing, but if that doesn't bother you its a pretty good deal. Or if you know someone with a metal lathe suppose they could be turned down a half inch, lol:
