84 yota ex-cab's 1990 Ex-cab 2WD Build and SAS!!
Alright, here's the deal. I wanted a little project truck so i found this 1990 toyota 2wd extra cab 22re truck for $500. It needed quite a bit of work but im redoing it all anyway...
The motor was there and basically all the wiring and intake was gone. The interior was completely hashed.
Here is is when i first started ripping into it:
Tore out the interior:
The motor had a bad head gasket so i started the rebuild on it..
Here are some pics of it:
The oil!!
Got the motor all apart and headed to the machine shop. Dropped off the crank, rods and block. The crank only needed a polish so that was good. I had the block bored .020 over and had the rods reconditioned and ARP bolts installed..
As far as the top end goes, i bought a new street rv head, complete rebuild and 261 cam from engine builder online. They are great and very fast. Had the parts the same week!!!
Here are some pics of the rebuild:
Block pained nice and pretty
Pile of clean parts...
Painting..
This cover took FOR EVER to clean!!
Some paint:
Started assembling the motor:
All complete
Well, i got the motor all rebuilt and i still needed alot of parts. The wiring and intake was all gone as well as a lot of other stuff. Had a heck of a time finding the right harness. I bought one out of a 1991 22re 5 sp. 4runner and one of the connections going into the ecu was wrong. Then i bought one from a 1989 22re 5sp 4wd truck and the other ecu connection was wrong. I searched all over and could NOT find the right harness so i just spliced the two together and made one good one.
I got the motor installed and everything pretty much good to go now. I made my own intake using a 82 supra AFM. I have a doug thorley tri y header, 2.25in pipe with magnaflow muffler. It does pretty decent on power. Definetly alot better than a stocker motor. One goos thing thats actually hard to believe, i am getting a consistent 26-28 MPG city hwy mix. I didnt think it would get this good! My brother has the same exact truck with 80,000 original miles and he only gets 22 MPG. Not sure why mine gets so much better....
Here are some pictures of the motor all installed..
Now it is time to get the axles ready to go in. I already had a rear axle out of a 86 turbo 4 runner that i am using. I bought a 82 front axle and a 5 sp tranny out of a 94 for $400 for both..
Here is the front axle stripped:
Sorry, not too many pictures of the axle rebuild!
Here it is all done and pained as well as the rear axle:
This is pretty much how it sits today. I am just waiting on a few more things then i will start the SAS!!!! Stay tuned...

Well i got some progress the last 2 days. It is now sitting on the axle!!!
I have a couple questions tho. I am running TG 3 inch springs. The shackle angle dont look too great. I set it before welding anything at 15* and now it is about vertical. It might be just that the bolts are tight now (i tightened them with no weight on springs)
I jumped on the front a little and they sat back a little. I sure hope these things settle.
Also, my axle is about 3 inches forward from center of the wheel well. Arent these springs just supposed to move it 1.5 inches?? I even have my front hanger 1/4" back on the frame...

Well, i am making some progress these days. I got the steering all done and all the power steering hooked up and ready to roll. The front is basically done with the exception of shocks, shock hoops and steering stabilizer..
Not sure what i need to do for shock hoops. The 2wd frame is way more arched than the others so the usual trailgear, allpro, marlin hoops are way too tall..
Here are a few pics of the steering..
Also, this is the pass. side ubolt. Is it supposed to be like this??
There is a pretty big gap on the bottom..

Awesome, That is such a clean truck. I wish my Yota was that clean, I have a year younger ext pickup than you, but I live in the Northeast, lots of salt on the road, and rust. Yours looks like it doesn't have a spot of rust on it!

Got some more pics for ya all! I got the crossmember all done... It is about 1 1/2 inch more low profile than the stock 4wd so it should be fine.
I also got the rear axle mounted all up. I am using f150 leafs (4 leaf pack with overload) They are reversed. I read people are having axle wrap with this setup but i am gonna give it a shot. I think most people remove or cut the overload off so with it, axle wrap might be less.. We will see!
I am waiting for shocks, and gotta have some drivelines built, and button up a few more things, and she should drive!! Cant wait!
Im really happy with how it sits with the f150 leafs. It is just about level!!

Yea, its actually not too bad. This is my first sas and its coming along great. I just take my time and measure measure measure!!!
The front brackets on the frame for the suspension are pretty easy to get off. Its basically just one mount on each side..

Still trying to figure out what i should do with the LSPV. What do you guys think?
Maybe a 4wd one is different but if i made a bracket to raise it, it would be like a foot long!! lol
