4x4Lamm's 1995 4Runner Build-Up Thread

As you may or know, I recently lost my 92 4Runner to fire and have replaced it with a 95 4Runner. I will miss it...

4Runner Fire Thread

This is the new 95 4Runner. It is stock, but will not reamin that way for long.

If you wish, follow along as I transform it into what is to me, the ultimate daily driver, camping and hunting 4x4 and light to moderate trail rig.

There won't be any exocages or SAS, but there will be lots of PRACTICAL stuff of all types.

I have many mods already that I was able to take from the 92, and I also just picked up a new part time job working for American Medical Response so there should be plenty to do.

Also, I'm trying to launch a webpage (I was inspired by Bob) that will document each mod with things such as cost, PNs, where to buy it, pros and cons, before and after pics, etc. Stay tuned...

Wish me luck!

Lamm

As it stands now:
-1995 4Runner SR5 Limited
-3.0 V6, 3-VZE
-Automatic transmission w/ OD
-4X4, of course!
-4.88 Gears
-Red exterior
-Tan leather interior
-120,xxx miles
-Power Everything (including moon roof)
-Stock roof rack
-Factory alarm/keyless

Just a thought, but don't waste your money on exhaust or K&N...they don't really do anything, and you could better spend the money on lockering it, or gearing it...

Yea, my 93 had the factory 4.88's. Did pretty good stock, but when I put on the 33's it became a real dog. I was only getting 13-15 mpg.

Well, I already have the K&N and exhaust from the old 4Runner and I achived good results with them, so why not just put them on the new one?

Are the 4.88s a factory option or what? I wouldn't that you just got lucky but a mistake from toyota. I've never heard of any runners coming with that low gearing. I wish my taco had some 4.56s, 88s would be nice too!

I used the "diff code" table everyone always uses, 4.879:1 gears.

A lot of automatic 2nd gens seem to have them.

Nice plans you have in mind..most are very similar to the ones i'm doing. I can't wait to start seeing pictures of your progress.

Since your spending a good ammount of $$ have you considered the MAF conversion rather than the crappy K&N FIPK?

Maybe in the future, but the K&N is free, cause I paid for it already. I would be curious to see some hard results on the MAF too...

MOD #1 (rustproofing and undercoating)

My first "mod" was to have the truck unercoated and rutproofed by a local provider.

The undercoating process involves abrasive removal of any major rust, paint/sealent of rust spots/areas, a full underbody steam cleaning and a full undercoating with Texaco brand undercoating.

The rustproofing process involves removal of interior door/body/tailgate panels and a steam cleaning, prep and spray of Texaco brand rustproofing.
Areas treated were; doors, tailgate, quarter panels, fenders, rockers and bumpers.

My family has used this place before for 5 vehicles and we have achived outstanding results. My Mom had an Aerostar that lived through 12 Ohio winters with NO rust. The owner is the only worker so the work is consistant.
He commented on how good of shape the 95 was in and how is was a good idea to bring it in.

Service also includes a 2 year warranty (meaning two inspections and touch-ups 1 year from now and 2 years from now, all free). Total cost was $371.00. Vehicle down time was 38 hours.

Other than the smell that lasts a few weeks, this service has no downsides. The upside of course being, preventing rust.

MOD #2 (Optima red top battery)

My second mod was to install the Optima red top battery I had in my 92 4Runner. Optima batteries are superior in many ways. They are sealed and don't leak or require fluid top offs, they are more durable and they have better power. The battery I removed was a Duralast brand.

The Optima batttery has:
960 Cranking amps @32' F
720 Cold cranking amps
90 Minute reserve

The Duralast has:
685 Cranking amps @32' F
550 Cold cranking amps
100 minute reserve capacity

As you can see, the Optima is far better for all but reserve. I have used every bit of the reserve once too (same Optima red) when I smoked my alternator, it worked fine. They also charge faster than a normal battery, another plus.

The optima is smaller however and requires some modifacations to use the stock battery hold-down. For mine, I used a 1" thick piece of MDF cut to the size of the battery, painted to resist damage and screwed to the battery at the corners to solve this. Also, a few large rubber washers between the battery and the holddown give extra piece of mind.

A past Optima battery I had came loose from its hold-down (chap plastic one) and had a nice hole rubbed into the side of it by the power steering pump pully and continued to work for 8 months!

There are other comparable batteries, but I know Optima is a good dependable battery and I recomend it.

The red top is suitable for everyone that does not have a winch, high output alternator, huge sound system or more than 400 watts of extra light sets.

I purchased mine for $110.00 w/o core charge discount at Advanced auto parts almost a year ago.

The best place to get them (for me anyway) is at:
http://www.advanceautoparts.com/ or http://www.summitracing.com/

You probally have factory 4.88's because you have an auto, and your truck probally orginally came with 31's.
