Would you remove a good running 22RE to install a OM617 ??

I have been looking for a toyota truck to install a Mercedes OM617 and found a really nice 1992 regular cab 4X4 that was originally from california and not been drove much since it has been hear in the mid west so the frame and body are exllent condition. The truck shows 207,650 miles on the odometer and the next oil change sticker is 1/22/11 or 209,973 showing it has not been drove much recently and the air filter looks like new. Engine runs good with the exception of after running for a while and coming to a stop sign it will rev up and down and when I opened the gas cap to put gas in it it had pressure in the tank. The PO owner was not aware of it ever having a timing chain replaced so that should be done (drivers side guide the most but replace chain while you are at it). It does not smoke but I have not done a compression check on it yet either.

My intended purpose of this truck is on road only with no off road and sometimes light towing, I have a light weight all aluminum 2 place snowmobile trailer that I frequently haul snowmobiles as well as ATV's. The torque of the diesel and fuel milage (I like to travel) is very important to me.

My question is would you remove a very good running 22RE to install a OM617 ?? That was my intended purpose when I bought the truck but I am hesitant to remove such a great running engine

since the truck is running, i would take this time to get all your ducks in a row, IE get all the parts required for the swap and plan out as much of the swap as you possibly can. Then when your ready to do it, you will have a much smaller amount of down time. once you yank that 22re you can either sell it or donate it to a local tech school

basically, until you are all set to get the swap completed it doesnt make sense to pull the 22re. unless you like toyota lawn ornaments

I had not planned to remove the 22RE until I had the majority of the parts for the swap. I do not even have a OM617 yet. The 22RE stays in until I find a good running (prefer complete running car) and I plan to purchase a kit instead of tabbing the adapter plate and engine mounts. I know I will still have to do some fabbing of my own though.

If you are asking if we would rather have a om617 powered truck or a 22re powered truck... well you are asking the question in a biased forum

Ditto on the bias. It's down to preference. If my 22re were in top condition (meaning I was confident i could get another 50-100k out of it without major breakdowns) I would be hesitant to swap to the OM617. The increased power/economy are tempting, but the work to do the conversion would be less appealing.

As it stands, my 22re leaks oil from every seal/gasket I can see, and probably some I cant. I know I have ran it nearly out of oil once, and the history it had before I swapped it in was completely unknown. (I needed an engine that ran and could potentially last about 5k miles, it has been 50k) So I know I will be replacing the engine soon. Knowing that the decision between another 22re and the OM617 became easier for me.

I had intended to start my swap last month, but money issues came up and I wasn't able to afford the conversion kit, so it will probably wait until spring. Idoubt my 22re will last that long; but I have a '90 4Runner to drive while the truck is down so I'm not overly rushed.

how much do the OM617 diesel 4runners sell for? I want one but dont have the space or tools or know how to do it. How much should I pay for one already done?
