You're looking at about a 1,000lb difference between the 22re and the 7.3PSD

So basically like putting a vw bug on your hood, I be worried about susp. rather than the swap, it'll drive horribly.

I owned a 16ft ford cube van with a turboed 7.3 diesel. Putting that in a 4runner will be way overkill. Overkill like...Kill, revive, kill, revive again, and then kill for the 3rd time. My buddy did the 1.9 tdi into his 86 pickup and he love it. Bought a 98 jetta for like 400$ The body was not in a decent shape but no one cared about that.
here's the truck in action

he added a chip a some nozzle later and gained decent numbers. He also get a sick gaz/milage.

i think a 7.3 swap into anything other than a ford or IH already equipped as 7.3 is a bad idea.

physical dimensions: its a HUGE motor. wide and tall. big block and then some.
weight: its HEAVY. over 1K lbs dressed. dont know specifics but its up there. a stock toyota curb weight is what, 3200?
its not that powerful: compare to cummins 6bt
its not that cheap: compare ford 7.3 parts trucks to cummins 6bt parts trucks. i say parts trucks because i would not do a swap on anything without a donor VEHICLE but thats me.

granted, if you have a 7.3 parts truck already and a vision as well as the cash to make it happen, a 7.3 swap could be pretty killer. its not a bad motor. I have owned a 7.3 6sp truck chipped exhaust etc. and it is a pretty decent motor. however, it is no cummins 6bt and the price difference between the two would not be worth it to me to choose the 7.3 over a 6bt.

furthermore, the motors discussed above are for a fullsize only IMHO. not for consideration into a toyota. in order, the motors i would swap into a toyota would be:
1)VW 1.9tdi AZ probably converted to M-TDI
2)VW 1.9TDI AHU
3)VW 1.9 TDI ALH
4)VW 1.6TD
5)Mercedes OM617 turbo & variants
6)Mercedes 4cyl TD(forget the name)
7)Isuzu 4BD1T & 4BD2T
8)Cummins 4BT

Any of you guys that have done the VW TDI swap...... What was your ballpark total cost. I would love to do it to my 85 in the next year or 2 but cannot do that kind of work in the old garage. Thanks

If the swap was up to me I'd forget all about mercedes, yes they hav up to about 3 litres of displacement, but the engines are not that well built. The 5piston is a half 6piston engine and a cut in half 4 piston combined - bad idea, even worse since the two rear piston is parallell, bot at the top at the same time. Not well balanced at all.
When it comes to torque , it will either be well going at low rpm and fairly strong, and be real shi*ty at high rpm, or otherwise - shi*ty at low rpm and well at high rpm.
I want both, most of us use the trucks as DD too..

My 85pu is original with a 2L diesel with 2.4liters, and a turbo and intercooler added. Wastegate is strangeled, runs about 1,7 bar~25psi at max. It works ok, able to sling mud, climb rocks and get fair mpg(overall noticed, never tested)
with 5,29 , 37"MTR std transfer ratio, its very strong at bottom rpm, can float on top of snow down to about 500rpm.

But there is no replacement for displacement..
Id like a bigger engine, ofcourse a diesel, rather one simple stupid, easy to trailfix and mechanical controlled, no ecu's og electrics other than the generator.
btw, yota has a 4.5litre v8 diesel..1VD-FTV

vw are ok, but how do they perform? If ecu's are ok for you, I'd look into audi's 2,5TDI, and vw LT35(not sure if they are common in the US, but in Europe they are used as deliveryvans and so on.

Anyway, I'd love to see a 7.3, cummins 6BT or 4BT in a toy pickup or runner very interesting thread, subscribed, keep the ideas flowing!!

It's been a little while since this thread opened, is that 7.3 any closer to being in the truck?
