R151F Shifter Mod after 3.4 Swap?

I was told my trans would be about 3 inches forward after going from a 22RE to the 3.4 and it is.

This puts my trans shifter right at the very front of the hole in the floor and right below the stereo/coin tray.

Those of you with the R151F, did you end up cutting off your shifter and dog legging it to clear? That's about all I can think of doing for clearance.

I'm going to set up my crawl box as a forward shift and either twin stick the rear case or use Davez shifters to move them forward.

So this works out to give me clearance for a console but kind of sucks for the trans shifter.

Pics would be helpful if anybodys got some.

I have been researching this swap for months. Yotatech has most of the info. Awesome site. That's why I joined.

Not as many detailed 22ER swaps threads as there are 3.0. Thanks to Yotatech I have found most of what I need. Some of the threads mention things I'm looking for but kind of dead end or have no pics.

I'll keep looking.

Oh gotcha, the 22re swap isn't as common, you're right. For my transfer case lever, I had to make a dogleg so it poked up in the right spot. There's not much you can do in the way of where it comes up. Then engine needs to be where it needs to be, etc, so I say just deal with it when the time comes. In the mean time message my buddy "jasond" https://www.yotatech.com/members/17130.html He has the 22re to 5vze sticky thread

In my limited searching I can only find 1 thread about shifter relocation from a 22re to 5vze. And that guy never really followed up. It may be a non-issue. Either way, it's super easy to cut the shifter and weld in a piece to make it work. Good luck, we're here when you need us.

Thanks,

Marlin's short throw kits just came in stock so I ordered one. I'll still have to mod the shifter. Was hoping for some pics.

I'm documenting the heck out of my swap. If I ever figure out how to post up pics I will. I have no problem on Marlin's site. I'm old and not so computer savy.

You will have to dogleg the shifter if you want it to clear the dash and still be able to use the console.

In my crawler, I had to bend the shifter to get it to clear BUT I also have no console, no carpet, and I had to cut 3" out of the floor.

Since you are using the R151F (turbo transmission) with the V6 bellhousing, everything is WAY forward of where it was originally designed to be. The V6 transmissions (R150F) accomodate that by moving the shifter back and making the Tcase a top shift. However, the R151F is a forward shift Tcase since the whole setup normally sits 4" back.

No one makes a custom shifter since this exact swap (R151F with the R150F bellhousing behind the 5VZ) is so rare.

Thanks guys. irab88 thanks for the pic. THAT....is pretty damn creative.

I have a complete 3.0 R150F but then I'd have to get an adapter to run my dual gear drive cases. I'll make the 151 work. Mines not as far forward as that guys.

yeah, if you want any ideas, just search google for "relocated shift lever" (that one above just happens to be in a yota, but there are tons out there)

i've been thinking about doing this type of swap, so this thread is a great heads-up as to shift lever interference

I may be rethinking my forward shift crawl box. I think the trans shifter may end up on top of it.

I'm still in the test fit stage with the engine.

Taking plenty of pics. Thanks for the replies.

R151F mod

I had to dog-leg my shifter quite a bit; the old shift boots (the rubber and the pleather ones) will both kind of fight you, as the resting positions are now different. I have since just made an inverted boot pattern & it all works well (7 years of daily driving no problem). Please note the significant cut going forward; you'll need to trim almost all the way to the pinch weld to have room for shifter movement. I wound up making a whole new base plate for mine.

I just did the r150 with gear case adapter with my 22re/5vz swap. Plus a MC short throw kit and twin sticks.

Easy peezy

Thanks for the pic 89934rnr. Pretty much what I'll have to do. I put a block off plate on the forward shift hole because my dog legged shifter will be almost on top of it. I have Davez triple shifter on the way for the cases. I also have a MC short shifter for the trans.

BBP, your right. The R150 would have been way easier than the R151. I don't have one though, or the $300 adapter.

I posted up on CL to sell my R150 from the 3.4 donor or trade the trans and case for just the trans from a 3.0. That way I could just swap the guts from my fresh R151 in and run the adapter like you did. No takers for a few months now.

Whatever I end up doing, I'll take pics and post up.

Sweet! Its a lot of work to mate up that gear case to a r150....ugh. Especially with only a single case

Yours was easy because you used the R150F transmission, which moves the shifters back 3-4" (and uses a Top shift case). For someone using the R151F (like me!) the shifter is wayyyyy forward in the first place, then 4 more inches forward when you mount it behind a V6.

Cheater
