Catalytic converter question
Okay... On a 1997 5vze motor, is the CAT welded to the down tube or is it connected using the flange. I know that there is a flange after the cat, just not sure about how it is connected to the downtube.
Also, does anyone know the distance from the cat to the second O2 sensor. Wanna get it right the first time. Thanks.

from the crossover there is a collector/flange, then a 90 and the first o2, and then cat.. Not sure if there was a flange inbetween the front o2 and cat or not. I can let you know in about 20 minutes..

Okay. I know I'm bringing this back from the dead but.... my down tube has a flange right before the cat. Did I buy the wrong downtube? I got it from toyotatruckandsuvparts.com in fresno. They said it was right for a 97 4runner.

You have the wrong cat. The down tube and cat are a single welded component on the '97 4Runner. The down tube and cat are a two piece unit on the '97 Tacoma. Your donor and mine share the same cat.

I had to get the CA aftermarket cat. It has a 2" tube going in. I made sure it was the approved one. Can I just cut the flange and weld the cat to it or do I need to look for the whole kit and cboodle together. Prolly outta check with my local ref.

Where did you find an aftermarket CARB legal cat for a '97 4runner? When I did my swap I couldn't find one ('96 4runner), and if there weren't any then there wouldn't be any now. If your aftermarket cat is not configured like the above pic with the OEM cat, it is definitely not legal. You cannot modify the cat to make it legal. The ref will fail it as tampering. That said, I did modify mine (cut downtube, rotate cat for clearance, weld back together) and the ref couldn't tell it was tampered and I finally passed. Cutting off the flanges and welding to look OEM may be somewhat harder to do. You'll also need to do some grinding to the flange at the crossover pipe to clear the UCA pivot mount, unless you did a SAS. The ref won't see or care about that. Yes, you need the whole kit and kaboodle to make the ref happy. Your choices for CARB legal cats for the earlier 3rd gen 4runners is about zero.

I googled california legal catalytic converters and actually found a 2009 list in pdf form of aftermarket cats that CARB approved. I will try to link the site when I'm not doing this on my phone. I went to a local exhaust guy that I know and he confirmed the one he was selling me was on the list.
My problem with just welding on the cat is the tube sizes. Downtube looks like it 2.5", tube going into the new cat is 2". I don't want the ref thinking that that is tampering. I was gonna see if I could expand some tube to fit inside the downtube, weld that up, and have the otherside slide over the 2" tube on the cat, then weld that up.
I am gonna go to the auto recycling plant tomorrow and see if they have what I need. If not....who knows.

For those that are interested, to find the most current list of CA approved aftermarket catalytic converters, google california air resources bord executive order D280-73. It is current as of 10/10. Sorry, I can't figure out how to link it using my phone.

Talk to a ref first and see what your options are before you decide to cut the cat. If you need to return it, you'll be SOL once you cut it.
Your potential issue here with the ref is the downtube. He will be using the Toyota parts list to determine what the cat looks like, and the OEM cat/downtube is a one piece unit. The downtube needs to be OEM or have an EO number. Unless he "overlooks" the downtube, I don't see how you'll get around this.
Here are a few pdfs that might help. Slight thread hijack: What make and pn cat did you get? Suspension is my next project and the cat may decide what route I go.

I'm not gonna cut the cat. I was just gonna cut the flange off the downtube then weld the new cat to that. Unfortunantly every place I called/talked to says that unless I am buying from a private seller, the cat has to be cut out of the exhaust b/c it can't be resold...so I'm gonna have a hard time finding the whole length of exhaust cuz most people are selling the exhaust with the motor.
I know the brand of cat is CATCO. I will get you part number when I get home.

there are quite a few people parting out late model Runners in the classifieds here. Have you tried there?
Also, try Dave at Davez Off Road.

Yes. I'm going as close to factory as I can get then will swap to the drivers side after approval.
Dntsdad: yeah I have tried a bunch of the classified on here but again, they are only selling with the motor. I will try davez.

Go to Catco's California catalytic converter catalog and search that part number.
I'm going to stick with my LT suspension plans. I've been exempt from smog checks since I got my sticker and can get another four years, so I wont worry about cats.
