Can't find a 5sp doner truck. Auto OK?
I am planning on doing a 3.4 upgrade to my 1992 SR5 Ext Cab pickup. I have a 5sp 3.0lt now. I can find a few 3.4 trucks but they all seem to be automatics.
How much extra work am I getting into if I pick up one of these? Or can it be done at all. Is the ECM completely different. There is a SR5 4runner at the local wreckers to me that is a 5sp but the engine is already gone. If I got the ECM and harness from this truck what would be the odds of it working on a potentially different year engine from another truck?
The more I look and phone around the more I get closer to saying ˟˟˟˟˟˟ it and buying the adaptors and dropping in a SB chev.

the hassle depends on where you live and the smog rules in my opinion. What state are you in?
You can read my saga on getting a California legal 5 speed from using an automatic as a donor here
If you are not in California, simply swapping the ECM and rewiring the harness isnt all that hard.

I am lucky in the emmision sense that I live in Ontario. No real tough checks up here. Every two years the truck will have to be tested on what essentially a chassis dyno. It only has to pass the emmision standard set for it in the year it was made. They won't even know the engine is swapped unless I tell them... Just an exhaust sniff test, at idle and at 40KPH.
I actually found a 97 4Runner with 175K on it. But is a Auto. I could get it for under 1000. I read in one of the other swap threads that this was done by simply changing a few pins in the harness and bypassing the neutral safety switch.

I would install the 3.4, buy and change to a manual ECM ($50-$100....i got mine for $40 from car-part.com), buy or build a crossover pipe, repin the harness and be done with it.
You trans will bolt right up so nothing essentially will change except the motor

agreed, I got a 97 3.4 from an auto. Just got a manual ecu, and manual harness. was good to go after re-pinning... if you get a 97 manual harness, then no re-pinning would be neccessary accept for the body harness splice. Oh, and the throttle body doesn't have the correct linkage. And no dashpot on the TB either. No real big deal that I can see though.
