What should I cover up re engine cleaning?

Hi guys,

For those of you who have cleaned your engine bay, what should I cover up besides the alternator and the belts? What did you guys use to cover those things up?

I'm going to do the CD-2 thing this weekend.

Philly,

No prob re Zaino. Are you going to order it?

As for the CD-2, I bought it at my local Auto Zone. They didn't have the "set" so I just bought regular engine cleaner.

Philly,

Nope, I didn't do it...I really need to do some searching and homework on what to cover. I really dont wanna screw anything up under the hood. That would be a disaster.

However, I did find plenty of things to do on Saturday:

I may give it a go next weekend though.

Have you looked at little joes writeup on ODW? it's in the toyota section. I covered everything he said and I didn't cover the belts. Do cover the cruise control electronics though, mine was freaking out after I hosed the engine. Seemed to heal itself after a week or 2.

Steve,

Ah, thanks buddy. Some of the other guys answered my questions too today. I'll do it next weekend. My engine bay is filthy.

Cleaning

A buddy of mine that does detailing suggested using the Gumout Steam Cleaner spray, leaving the engine running and not concentrationg the water stream on the alternator, starter, coil, or cruise housing. I've been doing all my cars that way for the last 16 years with no problems. I wipe everything down with a cloth afterwards. Anything that didn't come clean, I use the Westley's degreaser on the cloth, working on everything visible. Then some protectant...

I use plastic shopping bags and cover up electronics, and I use a big round stiff bristled brush to scrub with after I spray the cleaner on. I also start with the underside of the hood, and work my way down.

When done rinsing, I use my gas leaf blower to blow excess water out, it seems to work well.

I've never worried about covering the belts.

I don't know where yours is, but mine is bolted on top of the driver side wheel well. If I remember correctly, it's a black box with a cable going to the throttle and some wires plugged into it.

Hope that helped,
Steve
